The present invention relates to improvements 1n bottle stoppers as shown in my application, filed September 11, 1922, Ser.

type, having integral pull-tabs so that they 7 will form a tight seal with mouth of the bottle at the point adjacent of the pull-tab.

The invention resides in the sundry detailed construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts which will be pointed out in detail as the description of the invention proceeds.

In this specification and the annexed drawings, the invention is disclosed in the form in which it is considered to be the best, but the invention is not limited to such form because it is capable of being embodied in other forms; and it is to be understood that in and by the claims following the description herein it is intended to cover the invention in whatever form it may embody within the scope thereof.

In the drawings which disclose the preferred embodiment of the invention as at present devised Figure 1 is a plan view of cap constructed in accordance with the invention.

In carrying my invention into practice a I relatively thin flat plate-like body 1 may be of any desired outline or shape and made of any suitable material such as wood pulp, strawboard or the like, and coated or other wise impregnated with a waterproof material, such as paratfin or the like.

The stopper or cap thus provided is of such dimensions as to tightly fit in the mouth of a bottle with which it is used. In the form of the invention herein shown, the caps are illustrated as being a disk formation provided with an integral tab 2 extending outwardly from the peripheral edge of the cap, the tab being of any suitable shape or formation. The tab may be scored, notched or depressed to form a defi- .nite groove or incision 3 extending in a direction substantially transversely of the tab at a point to one side of the line a forming a continuation of the peripheral edge of the cap. The construction thus far recited is covered by my Patent No. 1,435,- 41 13, above referred to, and forms no part of the present invention and may not be used.

This invention further resides in scoring, notching, grooving or depressing the cap along the line at a point adjacent the tab 2,

but within the peripheral edge of the cap body, the scoring, notching or grooving forming. a chord of the cap body. The purpose of so grooving or notchlng the cap, ad-

j acent the pull-tab 2, is to weaken the cap body at this point permitting the cap to function in a peculiar manner which is of advantage when using a cap having pulltabs.

In Figure 1, the scoring 4 extends across the cap substantially parallel with its periphery and adjacent the tab for a distance at least the width of the tab, and has its end )ortions 4* extendin at an an de therefrom to the peripheral edge of the cap on opposite sides of the tab. This construction permits of a peculiar flexing or disposition of the stock at the juncture of the tab with the cap so as to make a very tight fit in the rabbet of the bottle mouth preventing leakage at that point; and, further, has the function of facilitating the removal of the cap, when the tab 2 is pulled, by permitting flexure of the cap at the point of scoring, under the pulling strain,.thus reducing the liability of tab beingtorn off.

The cap shown 1n Fig. 3 shows the scor ing 1 which corresponds to the scoring 1 in Fig. 1, as arcuate with the medial portion thereof opposite the tab 2 extending parallel with periphery edge of the cap, if continual, through the juncture of the tab and cap. The end portions ofthe scoring t extend to points adjacent the peripheral edge of the cap, as shown, because of the scoring 43 being on a greater are, or, in other words having a greater radii, than periphery of the can.

The scoring 1 and l may be provided on either or both faces of the cap.

Figs. 4: and 5 show the cap scored or stamped, as at 5, to have a circular marginal portion and having the scoring 6 extending on a substantial chord of the cap adjacent and opposite the pull-tab 2.

Throughout the specification and claims, the words scoring, grooving, depressing, notching and incisions are used without distinction, and refers to any means by which the cap may be weakened at the points indicated. -While Ihave shown various forms and manners for weakening the cap at the points desired, it is to be understood that any. other form, style or manner of weakeningthe'cap at these points iswithin the purview and scope of this invention.
