Description

SEAT AND DESK COMBINED Filed Feb. 24, 1928 .5, v Invehtor ZZZ/Key,
I 19 2mm Attorney Patented June 4, 1929.
UNITED STATES ROBERT LEE KEY, or OAKWOOD, TEXAS.
SEAT AND DESK COMBINED.
Application filed February 24, 1928 Serial No. 256,742.
One object of the said invention is the provision of .a seat designed more especially, though not necessarily for use in combination with a desk for school purposes, and one that is simple and sturdy in construction, and is susceptible of being expeditiously and easily fabricated without the employment of ex tensive machinery.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a combined seat and desk of simple and strong construction, and one generally well adapted to meet the requirements of school use.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invontion consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification Figure 1 is a front elevation illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention. Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same.
Figure 3 is a detail perspective of one of the back braces of my improvement.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary vertical section illustrative of the desk top and the compartment in the desk and below said top.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the views of the drawings.
Among other elements my novel device comprises two side members 1, preferably of appropriate wood. The side members 1 are arranged in parallelism, Figure 1, and each provided with a leg portion 2 and an upper seat edge 3 above the leg portion and also with a forward edge portion 4 extending upwardly from the rear end of the edge 3. The portions 5 of the members 1, back of the edges 4 are integral with the leg portions 2 as clearly appears in Figures 1 and 2. I would also have it understood that the seat edges 3 of the members 1 are concave.
In addition to the side members 1, my improvement comprises brace members 6, also by preference of appropriate wood. The said brace members 6 are provided with legs 7, and are arranged at the inner side of and against the members 1 and are fixedly connected to said members 1 through the medium of screws, nails or the like arranged as designated by 8 in Figure 2. The brace members 6 are provided with concave upper seat edges 9, arranged flush with the seat edges 3 of the side members 1, as appears in Figure 1. Itwill also be understood that the rear edges of the members 6 are connected by a cross Arranged in spaced relation on the seat edges 3 of the members 1' and against the seat edges 4 of said members 1 are slats 12 which form the seat and the back of the device.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that the seat forming slats 12 are superposed on the seat edges 3 of the members 1 and also on the seat edges 9 of the members 6, the said edges 3 and 9 being flush as clearly appears in Figure 1. In this connection, I would have it understood that within the purview of my invention the slats 12 may be screwed, nailed, or otherwise connected directly to the edges 3 and 4 of the members 1 as well as to the edges 9 of the members 6. I would also have it understood that in addition to the connections alluded to, the slats 12 may be connected at their ends by bolts or other appropriate means to angle irons 13 appropriately afiixed at 14 to the outer sides of the members 1 and following the edges 3 and 4 of said members 1. Manifestly when deemed expedient, the connection of the slats 12 may be to the angle irons 13, alone, or to the edges 3 and 4 of the members 1 and the edges 9 of the members 6, alone, in the discretion of the manufacturer of my improvements.
As will be gathered from the foregoing, the construction thus far described constitutes an economical, strong and comfortable seat adapted for school use, as well as for general I use in buildings as well as grounds adjacent to buildings. I prefer, however, to combine the seat construction described with a desk, and toward said end I aflix a desk top 14 to the upper ends of the side members 5 or to angle irons 15, Figure 4, aflixed to the side members 5, or to both, and I also interpose a transverse member 16 between the side mem bers 1 below and in spaced relation to the top 14 so as to form a compartment 17 open at the rear. Manifestly when the members 5, or rather the member portions 5 are equipped as just described, a combined seat and desk will be the result, and this at very little cost over the cost of the seat per se.
Both the top 14 and the transverse member 15 are preferably of wood, and it will be apparent that both may be fixed to the side members l by bolts, screws, nails or the like.
I have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of the part-s embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a full, clear and exact understanding of the said embodiment. I do not desire, however, to be understood as limiting myself to the precise construction and relative arrangement 01 parts, my invention being defined by my appended claims within the scope of which modifications may be made .without departure from my invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 7 1. A seat comprising side members with legs and edges above the legs, and also with edges extending upwardly from the rear ends of the first named edges, braces for said side members, fixed thereto and having legs and also having edges flush with the first named edges of the side members, and spaced slats arranged against all of said edges and fixed with respect to the side members.
2. A seat comprising side members with legs and edges above the legs and also with edges extending upwardly from the rear ends of the first named edges, braces for said side members, fixed thereto, and having legs and also having edges flush with the first named edges of the side members, spaced slats arranged against all of said edges and fixed with respect to the side members; the said brace members being connected together by front and rear cross bars fixedly connected thereto. a I
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
ROBERT LEE KEY.
