In order to operate the machine by power, belt wheel 47 is jecting from the casing 2. T he wheel, in the present instance, is a grooved wheel to receive a driving belt 49 which passes around a pulley50 on an electric motor 51 of any suitable type. lt will be understood that if a chain is used, instead of a belt, then the wheels 47 and 50 will be made'accordingly. TheV operationvof the device is as follows:
If acoiled tag strip is used, it Ais mounted on the drum 7 and passed over the roller 8 through the slot 10 and over the table 12 and under the top guide 34 until one of the'notches is in the path of the pawl 30, the proper type is then assembled in the chase 17 and the chase is locked in position in the head of the lever 16. lIf the device is to be operated by hand, all that is necessary is to push down the lever 16 by the handle '19, which withdraws the inking pad from under the type and withdraws also the feed pawl 30, allowing the type to make an impression on the tag that is located on the platen 13. The withdrawing of the pawl, as it recedes, drops it into the notch .7) of the next tag, so that as the lever 16 is raised by the spring 2O the pawl will move the tag strip forward one tag, and the inking pad will be moved under the chase and will ink the type for the next impression.
If power is applied through'a motor, then the rotationof the wheel 47 causes the cani 52 to depress the lever 54, vand as this lever is connected tothe hand lever 16 by the pin 57, itY will automaticallyl move the hand lever, make the impression and feed the tag for- "If it is desired to make an impression on a single tag such as shownin Fig. 9, then all thaty is'necesasry is to place the tag on the platen against the end of the pawl and depress the lever 16, which will printthe tag, and the pawl, in its forward movement, will discharge the tag from the machine.

The combination VYin a tag-printing machine, of a base ;V a casing mounted on the base; a bracket projecting from the casing; a lever pivotally mounted on the bracket; a type chase carried by the lever; a platen mounted on the casing; a grooved table back of the platen; a slotted guide back of the table; a wheel around. which a tag strip passes from the casing through the slot and under the table; standards projecting from the block; a feed lever pivotally mounted on the standards; a link connecting said feed lever with the first-mentioned lever; and a pawl pivotally mounted on the opposite end of the feed lever, said pawl having ngers adapted to y fixed laten located on the frame under the` type c iase; a grooved table back of the platen over which a tag strip is fed; means for holding the tag strip onto the table; a standard; a feed lever pivoted to the standard; av link connecting the lever with the hand'lever; and a pawl yieldingly mounted on the opposite end of the feed lever and arranged to travel over the table, said pawl having fingers extending into the grooves of the table and arranged to engage a tag strip and feed it forward to be printed.
4. The combination-of a tag-printing machine; a base; a casing arranged to contain a rolled tag-strip.; a bracket on the casing; a lever pivotally mounted on the bracket;-a spring tending to raise the lever; a type chase mounted on the lever; a fixedk platen on the casing; means for feeding the tag strip onto the platen; a spindle on the casing; a driving wheel on the spindle; a cam on said wheel; an operating lever pivoted on lthe casing; and a rod connecting the lever with said first-mentioned lever which carries the type chase, said last-mentioned lever being located under the cam so that as the wheel is turned the chase-carrying lever will be actuated,
