UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELIAS WOLF, OF ELxrNs BABE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOB'., BY MBsNaAs'sIGN-l MENTS, TO HOWARD WOLF, BENJAMIN WOLF, ELIAS WOLF, LOUIS .WOLI F,;
ALBERT WOLF, TRADING AND DOING BUSINESS As NATIONAL METAL EDGE COMPANY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BASTEBOARD Box.
. Application .filed April 27, 1926. Serial No. 104,868.
Many articles of merchandise' are not only shipped in pasteboardboxes, but Such boxes,
` with their contents, are often placed by the merchant on shelves and are removed, from 5 time to time, for inspection by and sales to customers. lvhensuch boxes are piled one above another, access to the contents of any boxbelow the top one is diflicult and cannot be had without also disturbing or removing the box or boxes above the one which is removed, and time and care are required to replace the box in its proper order.
The object offmy invention is to provide a box which may be readily slipped'out from any boxes above it, and which need only be withdrawn part wayout to allow the contents thereof to be readily removed, thereby avoiding the vcomplete removal of the box and the disturbance of other boxes in the pile.
A`A preferred embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- I Fig. l is a perspective view of the box body. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the complete box in the position adapted for use.
4F ig. 3 is a view, `Similar to Fig. 2, with the front section of the box cover raised.
The body a of the box may comprise a botends, although I prefer to make the-lid of the special form hereinafter described. Y
Part of the front of the box body comprises a flap or tab c. Preferably, the front of the box body is composed of end sections d d (adjoining the respective sides) and a central section constituting the tab. Preferably, also, the top edge of the front is cut away to form two recesses. ev e located at equal distances on opposite sides of a point located midway between the side edges of the front adjoining the sides of the box and also located at equal distances respectively from such 'side edges. The dividing lines between the central tab c and the end sections extend between the box bottom and the .troughs of the recess e e,
so that each recess is formed partly -in the tab exis preferably coinciding with the lower edge of the front (or the front edge of the bottom). It is preferred, fhowever, tof manufacture the box body with the front sections c, d, d integral and rigid with such body and with each other and to provide two lines f f of perforat-ions connecting-the troughs of the recesses e e with the bottom edge of the front.
The box is preferably shipped in such condi'- tion, and the merchant tears or cutSaWay the front along the lines f f, therebymaking the tab c distinctly separate, and bends down the tab on a line about coincident between the lower front edge of the box. The tab, while yin hinged relation with the body, will then project forward, after which he depositsthe box, with other similar boxes, on a shelf. y
The projecting tab c forms al handle by means of which any box may be-partly pulled out beyond the fronts of other boxes. By tilting up the lid, a space is afforded to allow ready access to the contained articles, any gne of which may be easily slipped out of the ox.
To further facilitate access to the box, it is desirable to provide the lid b or cover of the box with a hinged vfront section g. `Upon pulling out the boXa distance not necessarily greater than the width of the section g (measuredback from its front), the sectionmay be swung up to allow .the most ready possible access to the merchandise within the box.
It may be desirable, with some articles of merchandise, to glue the sides and rear of the main section of the lid to the Sides and rear of the box body, thereby affording a box which is permanently enclosedex'cept at the front part of its top and at the central part of its front. f,
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patentis:
1, A box comprising a'bodyhaving a bottom, sides, rear and front, the front comprising two end sections and a centralap, the top edge of the front having two recesses each of which is formed partly in an end section.
2. A box'comprising a body having a bot tom, sides, rear and front, the top vedge of the front being provided with a plurality of rel cesses of less depth .than the height of the front, the front being provided with two lines partly in the flap and af perforations extending between the troughs ed to the remainder of the lid, and the body of the respective recesses and the bottom of having a flap connected with the box bot- 15 the box body. tom and adapted to project'forward under 3. A box comprising a body and a lid, the and beyond the hinged section of the lid when 5 lid having its front portion hingedly conthe latter is swung down over the front of the nected to the remainder of the lid, and the box body, that part of the'lid back of its body having a flap. connected with the box hinged section being secured in fixed relation 20 bottom and adapted to project forward under to the box body.
and beyond the hinged section of the lid when In testimony of which invention, I have 10 the latter is swung down over the front of the hereunto set my hand, at Philadelphia,
box body. Pennsylvania, on this 26thday of April, 1926. y
4. A box comprising a body and a lid, the
lid having its front portion hingedly connect- ELIAS WOLF.
