GOLF
BAG.
Application filed April 9, 1924. Serial No. 705,366.
The invention relates to golf bags and more particularly to improvements in the top and bottom reenforcing portions. I
An object of the invention is to provide a golf bag in which the body portion extends into reenforcing sheet metal end members on gaging on both sides of the body member with fastening means clamping the assembly together. I
Another object of the invention is to provide a sheet metal en'd member which will dispense with the use of an exposed leather v,wear co'llar. r j
The invention further consists in the several features hereinafter'setforth and more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a side view of a golf bag embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 with intermediate parts broken away; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a bag bottom, similar to Fig. 2, showing a modified form of the invention.
In the drawings, indicates a tubular casing of canvas or other suitable material, provided with lon itudinally extending spring metal stays 11 retained in pockets formed by stitching leather or fabric strips 12' onto the casing. Each end of the casing has stitched to it a reenforcing collar 13 of thin leather or fabric which will facilitate assembly and engagement with metal end mem bers hereinafter described.
The casing is closed at one end by a bottom member 14: of light sheet metal, such as aluminum, to minimize weight and resist corrosion and wear. The bottom 14 has a central disk-like portion 15 fitting within the end of the casing and provided with a depending flange 16 which engages the inner walls of the casing. and flares outwardly at its lower edge 17. A sheet metal collar 18flts over the casing and is provided with flaring or outwardly flanged lower edge portions 19 in abutment with the flaring or outwardly flanged edge 17 which is turned or. rolled upwardly and over to form an inwardly extending flange 20 engaging the edge 19, thereby providing a bead-forming seam securing the bottom and collar together with a narrow annular space into which the end of the easing extends. The joint at the flared edges 17 and 19 may also be welded if desired.
shape. I
At the upper end of the casing I provide'a' In order to clamp the end of the casing in place between the metal end members rivets 21 or other suitable fastening means extend through the assembly comprising the flange V 16, the casing, and the collar 18, the ends of the stays 11 being provided with openings 22 to receive the rivets.
The metal collar '18 preferably extends The bead also stifl'ens the upper edge so that the collar will not become dented out of metal reenforcement similar to that at the bottom but omitting the central disk-like portion. This structure comprises a collar member 24 which may be identical with the collar member 18 and is secured in similar relation to the casing and to an outwardly flanged cylindrical sheet metal ring member 25 fitting within the casing. The lower edge of the ring member 25 is inwardly turned to avoid a sharp edge which might injure the shafts of the golf clubs, and rivets 26 fasten the assembly together as in the bottom con struction, the rivets passing through apertures at the upper ends of the stays. The turned or rolled lower edge portions of the ring 1nember25 forma smooth projecting head against which the shafts or handles of the golf clubs may rest.
One end of the usual carrying strap 27 is secured to the cylindrical member 25 by rivets 28 or other fastening devices which extend through the assembly in a manner similar to rivets 21. In addition to the strap the customary carrying handle 29 and ball pocket 30 are provided.
In place of the crimped or rolled joint of Fig. 2, it is desirable in some instancesto provide an integral metal reenforcement for the ends of the casing, a bottom reenforcement being shown in Fig. 3, wherein 1 1 indicates a bottom member having adisk-like central portion 15 provided with a depending flange 16 outwardly flared at 17and thence inwardly and upwardly directed to form a collar18 surrounding the lower edge of the casing and secured thereto in the manner above described. The lower flared end end members.
17" serves to stiffen the collar 18 and forms a circumferential bead which will take most of the Wear. i
' The invention provides a strong but inexpensive construction of neat appearance and one Well adapted to withstand the wear incident to continued use.
I desire it to be understood that this invention is not to be limited to any specific form or arrangement of parts except in so fa'ras such limitations are specified in the claims. 4
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a golf bag, the combination, with a tubular casing of flexible material, of sheet metal end members engaging the inner and outer walls of said casing and both flaring outwardly from the edge of the casing to form a projecting bead, and fastening means extending through the casing and end mem-- bers and clamping said casing between said outer walls of said casing and joined together to enclose the end of said casing and to form a bag bottom, spring metalstays extending longitudinally of said casing and having apertured ends, and fastening means extend ing through the assembly comprising the end members, casing and stays and clamping said casing between said end members.
3. In a golf bag, the combination, with a tubular casing of flexible material, of sheet metal end members engaging the inner and outer walls of said casing and having flared end portions "forming abutting flangesfor flanged portions disposed in abutting and embracing relation to form a seam connectmg said ring members together, and a'tubular casinghaving its end portions disposed and secured within said recess.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
