This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in locks and has as an object to provide novel means for protecting the lock cylinder against destruction and for maintaining the lock cylinder assembled with its mounting member.
f Another object of this invention resides in the provision of an enlarged head formed on the outer end of the lock cylinder and which is enclosed by a correspondingly shaped protecting hood to facilitate turning of the lock cylinder independently of the key.
Another object of this invention resides in the provision of a novel lock construction of the character described in which a protecting hood'encloses the outer end of the lock cylinder and the mounting member to prevent destruction thereof and whose inner portion is provided with novel means to be clinched `over a stop formed in the mounting member to prevent detachment of the cap and removal of the lock cylinder.
A further object of this invention resides in the provision of a lock device in which destruction of the lock cylinder is prevented by a protecting hood stamped from hardened bendable metal and whose inner end is clinched at intervals to engage a stop formed on'the mounting member, and said protecting hood being apertured adjacent the portions whereby the clinching may be accomplished Without causing binding between the hood and the mounting member.
And a still further obj ect of this invention resides in the provision of a lock device in which the lock cylinder is provided with an enlarged irregularly shaped head at its outer end over which a protecting hood is engaged whose inner end is freely rotatably connected with the mounting member to prevent separation of the protecting hood and the lock cylinder from the mounting member and to provide means for turning the lock cylinder independently of its key.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the novel constructlon, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the appended claims, it being understood that such changes'in the precise embodiment of the hereindisclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claims.

A lock cylinder 9` having a plurality of conventional tumblers 10 is mounted in the.. v longitudinal bore 6 of the mounting member,
and is movable from a locked position upon the insertion o f a key 11 inder 9in the customary manner. When the cylinder is in-locked position, the plungers are urged into a longitudinal groove 12 and when moved to its unlocked position, which in the present inst-ance is 90 degrees from the locked position, the lower ends of the plungers are aligned with the second longitudinal groove 13 topermit the removal of the Vkey 11.
The innermost end of the cylinder 9 is reduced in diameter, as at 14, to extend through the reduced bore at the innermost end of the bore 6 with its end iiush with the-end of the mounting member; and at one point in the periphery of the reduced diameter 14 a stop 15 is formed which extends to the diameter of the major portion of the lock cylinder, and moves in a cut away portion 16 in the shoulder 8 to abut theends thereof at the limits of rotation of the lock cylinder/f ,i

The outer face of the enlargement or head 18 is provided with a substantially elliptical shaped projection 20 whose longitudinal axis aligns with that of the key opening 21 in the lock cylinder and whose outer ends terminate in substantially circular pins 22.
Enelosing the elliptical shaped Vprojection Q0, the head or enlargement 18 and the adjacent portion oi the mounting member is a protecting hood or cap 23, which is pressed from bendable metal hardened suiiiciently Yto withstand destruction by chipping and the like. The closed, outermost end of the protecting hood, which is apertured, as at 24, to permit the insertion of the key 11 into the lock cylinder, is formed to'substantially the contour of the projection 20 and the pins 22, as best illustrated in Figure 5, to constitute a handle by which the cylinder may be turned independent of the key 11, and the innermost end of the' hood projects over the mounting member to abut the innermost wall 25 of the annular slot 17. The inner diameter of the hood is such as to snugly receive the enlargement 18 and the adjacent outermost end ofthe mounting member, and the outer diameter thereof is substantially the same as the major portion ot' the mounting member so that it lorms substantially a continuation thereof.
The hood member and consequently the lock cylinder received/therein is n'iaintained assembled with the mounting member in the following manner. A plurality ol openings 26 are formed in the hood men'iber adjacent itsl inner periphery at spaced intervals about its diameter and the metal 27 between the openings 26 and the innermost periphery of the hood, which lays directly over the annular groove 17, is clinched or pressed inwardly into the groove to freely rotatably secure the hood against detachment from the mounting member. It will be noted that the portions 27 are provided with a rounded medial projet-.tion 28 which engage the outermost wall of the annular groove and facilitate' free rotation ot' the hood with ber.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing,

In a lock device, a mounting member, a lock cylinder rotatable therein, an enlargementi'ormed on the outer end of the lock cylinder, a stop formed on the mounting member, a cap member enclosing the enlargement formed on the lock cylinder and shaped to conform to the contour thereof whereby it is rotatable with the lock cylinder, and means pressed inwardlyl from the cap member and engaged with the mounting member stop to maintain the lock cylinder and cap member freely rotatably assembled with the mounting member.

In a. lock device, a mounting member, a vlock cylinder rotatable therein, a projecting enlargement formed on one end of the lock cylinder, a cap enclosing the lock cylinder enlargement and the adjacent portion ot' the mounting member', and means connecting the cap with the mounting member to maintain the lock cylinder and cap assembled with the mounting member.

In a lock device, a mountingmember having an annular groove, a lock cylinder rotatable in the mounting member, a cap enclosing the outer end of the lock cylinder and the adjacent portion ot the mounting member, and pressed-in portions carried by the inner end of the cap and engaged in the mounting member annular groove whereby the parts are maintained against disassembly but permitted'rotation.

In a lock device, a mounting member having an annular groove, a lock cylinder rotatable in the mounting member, acap en closing the outer end of the lock cylinder and the adj aeentportion of the mounting member and having an opening adjacent its inner end, and the material between the opening and the innermost periphery of the cap being pressed downwardly into the mounting mem- -cylinder aga1nst destruction.

In a lock device, lock cylinder rotatable therein, an enlargement formed on the outer end of the lock cylinder and having an irregular shape, a' cap enclosing the lock cylinder enlargement' and correspondingly shaped whereby the irregular shape of the ca provides convenient means for turning t e lock cylinder, and means connecting the cap with the mounting member to prevent separation thereof.
