Description

Patented May 21, 1929.
UNITED STATESv GUSTAV C. ULLRICH, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE REPUBLIC METAL- PATENT oFF cE.
WARE 00., OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OI NEW YORK.
GARBAGE BECEPTACLE.
Application filed October 27, 1926. Serial No. 144,488.
This invention relates generally to receptacles for garbage and other waste, and more particularly .to improvements in the operating devices for the closures of such recep-.
tacles.
The primary-object of the invention is the provision of a foot-actuated mechanism which permits of quickly and easily opening the closure and whose parts, with the exception. of the foot pedal,- are entirely concealed.
Another object is to provide a closure operating mechanism, which is simple, strong and durable in construction, which is neat in appearance, and which can be manufactured at a moderate cost.
. In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a'side elevation of a garbage receptacle constructed in accordance with my invention. Figure 2 is a sectional side elevation thereof. Figure 3 is a horizontal section thereof on line 3-3, Fig. 2. Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view of the upper end of the receptacle and associated parts. Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary top plan view of the outer can body, showing the location of the cover hingepintle.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
In the preferred embodiment of the in-' ventionshown in the accompanying drawings, the same comprises an outer can-body 10 of cylindrical form, constructed of sheet metal such as galvanized iron, and provided a suitable distance above its lower end with a bottom wall 11. At its open upper end the can-body has a vertically-swinging cover 12 hinged to the rear side thereof. This hinge consists of a pintle 13 which may form a part of a reinforcing ring 14 contained withln a bead 15 at the upper edge of the can-body, and attached to the underside of the cover is a hinge leaf 16 which engages this pintle. As shown in Fig. 5, the pintle part of the ring 14 is not enclosed by the bead and that portion of the can-body immediatel below the pintle is out out or recessed as s own at 17, to permit the hinge to work freely and not bind.
Loosely fitted within the outer can-body is an inner container or rece tacle 18 which rests on the bottom 11 of sai outer can-body and which is adapted to receive the garbage or other waste material. This receptacle 1s provided with a suitable bail 19 by which it may be conveniently handled, when placing it withinand removing it from the outer can-body.
The cover operating mechanism consists of a vertically-swinging foot lever 20 extending from front to rear of the can-body 10 and arranged in the space beneath its botdepending lug or arm 28 secured to the underside of the cover 12 forwardly of its hinge. The pivot pin 27 of this rod loosely engages an opening or slot 29 in its attaching lug to permit the raising and lowering movements of the cover without binding. To prevent the receptacle 18 comin in contact with the connectin rod 26 and interfering with the opening 0 the cover, said rod is enclosed in a tube 30 suitably fastened to the rear wall of the can-body and extending throu h an;
opening 31 in the bottom wall of the atter. The upper end of this tube terminates below the upper edge of the can-body so as to clear the attaching arm 28 of the cover in its closed position.
When it is desired to raise the cover 12, the
foot pedal 24 is depressed which rocks the lever 20 and elevates the connecting rod '26 to swing the cover to the open position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 4. Upon releasi the foot-pedal, the cover returns to its close position by gravit and its actuating parts likewise return tot e normal position shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
This improved sanitary garbage receptacle is manifestly simple and compact in construction its cover actuating mechanism is concealed within the'can-body where it is rotected and out of the way, and it is neat 1n appearance. 7
I claim as m invention I A device of t e character described, com prising a can-body havin a :bottom wall spaced from the lower en thereof, a cover. hinged to the top of said cainbody and having an arm depending therefrom arranged for Wardl of the hinge and adapted to extend into t 1e u'pper rear portion of the can-body in the closed position of the cover, a vertically-swinging foot lever arranged in the space below the can-bottom and fulcrumed on the latter, a tube extending lengthwise within the can-body along its rearwall and opening at its lower end into the space below its bottom wall and terminating at its upper end below the cover-arm, and a connecting 1 rod arranged in said tube and pivoted at its lower end to the foot-lever and at its upper end to said cover-arm.
