NOZZLE CONSTRUCTIN.
Application filed. January 26, 1927.
This invention relates to a nozzle construction, and more particularly to a nozzle especially designed for use in spraying the ashes in the ashpit of a turnace to settle the dust and render the removing o't ashes more sanitary.
Another object ot the invention is to provide a device oi? this character so constructed that the water sprayed trom the nozzle will not contact with the gratos of the furnace to damage the same.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an adjustable nozzle so constructed that by sliding` the movable section of the nozzle longitudinally of the pipe in which it is positioned, the width of the spray may be regulated.
lV ith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement ot parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevational view illustrating the manner ot attaching the nozzle.
Figure 2 is a sectional view through the nozzle.
Figure 3 is a sectional View taken at right angles, to Figure 2.
Figure fl is a sectional View taken on line Ll--l of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the adjustable nozzle section.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates a furnace which is supplied with the usual hinged door G that normally closes the ashpit of the 'furnace.
As shown by Figure l, the device includes a pipe 7 that has connection with the pipe 8 that supplies water to the boiler of the furnace, pipe 9 being in communication therewith through the elbow 10. At one end of the pipe 9 is an elbow 11 in which the substantially short pipe 12 extends, the upper end of pipe 12 extending into the elbow 13 to which the pipe 14 is connected in such a way that the pipe 14 may swing in a horizontal plane as the door 6 is opened and closed.
Serial No. 163,738.
Iommuuicating"with pipe 1d is a vertical pipe 15 that has an inwardly extended pipe 16 that connects with the body portion 17 ot the nozzle which is substantially T- shaped, the same being provided with cxtcrnal. threads 18 whereby the saine may be secured into a threaded opening of the door 6.
Fitted within the body portion and held therein by Yfrictional Contact with the body portion, is an elongated adjustable member 19 which has an eccentrically formed bore 2() and a diagonally disposed slot 21 communicating therewith, the slot 21 extending along the side of the member 19 so that when the movable member 19 is moved to a position to expose the sides ot the slot, water may pass laterally theretrom to spread the spray throughout the entire surface oit the ashpit.
lt will be seen that by moving the nozzle inwardly so that only the end of the Inomber 19 is exposed, the spray will be directed forwardly and downwardly. In order that inward movement ot the member 19 may be restricted, a shoulder 22 is termed within the body portion 17.
Positioned adjacent to the shoulder 22 is a screening member 23 designed to filter the water in its passage through the body portion to prevent foreign matter from collecting in the slot of the member 19 to restrict the flow of water therethrough.
Pipe 16 connects with the body portion 17 through the extension 24, as clearly shown by Figure 2, the water through the various pipes and. pipe 16 being controlled by means ot the valve The reference character 2G indica-tes a removable. plug tit-- ted in one end of the body portion 17 tor closing the same, and it will be seen that should it be desired to remove the screening member, the plug 26 may be removed permittiiur accessI to the interior of the body portion.
From the :toregoin it will be obvious that due to the construction shown and described, water may be directed downwardly and laterally over the ashpit oi a furnace to settle the dust thereii'i preparatory to removing the ashes.
l claim: i
A nozzle including a body portion having a bore therethrough, an extension having a bore theretln'ough communicating with the bore in the body portion, a pipe in the extension for feeding fluid to the body por'- tion, a removable plug closing the bore atY at its sides in Communication with said bore to establish Communication between the bore and the atmosphere, said adjustable member being adapted to be rotated to vary the plane of flow of fluid from the body portion and adjustable longitudinally in the body to control the amount of said slot exposed beyond the body portion.
In testimony that -I claim the foregoing as 20 my own, I have hereto'allixed my signature.
