Description

0. G. DURIG READING STAND May 14, 1929.
Filed July 29, 1927 Orv/a Z a ATTORNEY WITNESS:
Patented May 14, 1929.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ORVAL GORBY DUBIG, OF WELLSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA.
READING STAND.
Application filed July 29,
This invention relates to reading stand embodying among other characteristics a platform adapted to tilt its Work at a desired inclination.
Another object of the invention comprehends means for adjustably tilting the plat form.
An additional object of the invention comprehends a magnifying member adapted for focusing reading matter and the like carried by the platform to materially aid persons having defective eye sight and for scientific study and research.
Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention further consists of the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view taken through the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary side elevation of a platform and focusing member illustrating the application of an adjustable mounting for the focusing member upon the platform.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a stand or desk provided with a top 11 and a shelf 12, the latter being adapted to separate the interior of the stand or desk and the compartments 13 and 14 which may be employed for storing and depositing literature and the like.
Ears 15 being carried upon the sides of the desk and which are adapted to receive therethrough a common shaft member 16. Cleats or other fastening elements such as indicated at 17 fixed to the shaft 16 are adapted for connection with the under side of a platform 18. The extremities of the shaft 16 being extended through sleeves 19 in the openings provided in the ears and 1927. Serial No. 209,306.
which carry upon threaded portions thereof adjusting nuts 20 which when tightened against the outer ends of the sleeve 19 upon the shaft 16 will lock the platform 18 at a desired inclination. A ledge 21 being carried upon one side edge of the platform 18 to prevent reading matter from sliding from the platform when the latter is called into use. Sleeve members 22 being carried upon the opposed side edges of the platform 18 and which are adapted to receive standards 23 adjustably mounted therein by thumb screws 24. V
A magnifying glass or other focusing element, such as indicated at 25 being adapted for connection with the upwardly extending ends of the standards 23 in order that the same may be raised and lowered upon the face of the platform 18 to magnify the print of reading matter carried by the plat form. The invention being primarily designed for use persons having impaired or defectiveeye sight but which may also be effectively employed by scientists in the examination of specimens, etc.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction, and the right is here- .in reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is o A stand having ears located at spaced intervals thereon, sleeves extended horizontally throughsaid ears, a platform, a shaft horizontally disposed with relation to and fixed upon the underside thereof having its ends extended through said ears to pivotally and tiltably mount said platform above the stand, and locking members car: ried upon the outermost ends of the shaft engageable with said sleeves to sustain the platform at a desired inclination between said ears and upon said stand.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
ORVAL GORBY DURIG.
