E. C. ATKINS. cRoss cur SAW HANDLES. No.171,337. v Patented ne. z1,1a7s.
fly. a.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELIAS O. ATKINS, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CROSSCUT-SAW HANDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 171,337, dated December 21, 1875; application filed J une. 30, 1875. i
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, E. G. ATKINS, of [ndianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in (Jrosscut-Saw Handles and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of sawhandles which are intended to be used with one or both hands; and it consists in attaching two separate handles to the same tang in the same plane with the saw, and standing at such angle to each other as to be most con venient for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- A represents the saw-blade, and B the casting to which it is fastened. The casting B is formed with two slotted or forked proj eotions, a b, and the body of the casting is slotted or forked between said projections for the insertion of the inner upper corner of the sawblade. The blade is pivoted in the upper projection a, while a bolt, 6, passes through the lower projection b and a slot, as, in the blade, and is then fastened by a thumb-nut, d, whereby the saw-blade is adjusted at any angle with the handles desired. The back of the casting B forms a tang, O, of suitable size and form, and on each end thereof is secured a handle, D, which handles are in the same plane as the saw-blade, and stand at a suitable angle with each other.
The saw may be operated by either handle alone, or by usingboth at the same time.
This invention is applicable to both crosscut and rip saws.
I am aware that the broad idea of supplyinga saw with two handles at each end is not new.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The detachabletang or shank B, furnished with handles D D, and arranged in connection with a saw-blade, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that 1 claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ELIAS O. ATKINS.
