IVIECHANICAI;v MOVEMENT.
y' VApplication filed July-2, 1927. Serial No. 293,207. V
Our invention is an improved and simplified mechanical movement for rotating a vvessel or other object simultaneously upon two angularly disposed axes. Vehave illustrated our invention as/applied to a Washing -machine,-to which useit is .Well adapted, and haveshown the axes of rotation perpendicular'to each other. However, the use ofl our device 1s 1n norway limited tothe use of Washing machines but maybe used as mixers ofvarious kinds,` butter churns and like uses.
Figure '1 isa plan kvievvof a Washing machine embodying our invention.
Figure 2is'a vievvsimilarto Figure 1 but with the vessel'and `its supporting-.- frame occupying-a position shown in Figure 1.' Y v ,Figure 3 shov'vsfa` modification ofthe enb and the vessel. Y
`The vessel, l, vof. ythe Washing machine, shovvnas oylindricalfinform, ismounted in an open supporting frame 2.v Fixed to andy rigid with the supporting frame 2 a-t one side thereof is a trunnion, 3,4 journaled in a bearing 4 mounted on a Stationary supporting structure 5. If yit is desirable to inclose the rotating vessel' 1 in a casing the supporting structure 5 may be, as illustrated, a casing in which the moving parts are VIn- 'closed lThe'trunnion 3 may be 4fitted Withv a hand crank 6 at itsrouter end or may, ofl course, be rotated by an electric motor or fr other power. At the opposite side the frame 1 2 is journaled upon a trunnion 7 which projects inwardly from and is fixed tothe supporting structure or casing. Fixed to the trunnion 7 is a sprocket Wheel 8."A The boss 9 is fixed toor an kintegral part of the sta- `tionary supportrf. In the structure illus- Y trated I have shown a set screw 10 to restrain the ,trunnion V,7 and the sprocketv Wheel k8 against rotation.A
At the center of its closed enda trunnion 11 isvfixed to and projectsfromthe vessel 1 and is journaled in the cross-arm1of the' U- shaped member of the'gsupporting frame.
and an annular member-14 lying inv a k'plane perpendicular tothe arms 152115 ofthe `rounded near its open' end-by thejannulus 14.` Mounted onthe annulus arefbearperpendicular to that waging means between the supportingframe ,1
Wheels. The frame 2 comprisesa U-shaped member ing studsv 16- .upon vwhich are lrotatably mounted anti-friction rollers 17 bearingup on a circular rail 15 fixed to and extending around the cylindrical surfaceof `the vfessel. Eachof Ythe roll-ers l17is provided with aflange 18.V designed to .engage thesidejoffv the rail 15 adjacent the open lend of the ves-l f sel.. Helical springs 19 surround the studs 16 .andabut at .their opposite ends against the annulus 14 and 'the'` rollers 17 .'respec, -Y
tively, thereby serving to hold 'the vessel 'A With `spring 4pressure in its .position Within the frame 2.H
kIn order to insure against any play,l of Vthe'l have shown such a modification in Figure, wherein the vrollers -17 are represented -as 4 mounted in bearings upon opposite endsof al spring member y20`1xed at itsfcentral part.v 2.1k tothe annulus 14 andso formed-'thatits ends, carrying the rollers, are under'te'nesion-radially against the rail 15 carried byv the vessel. l g
A sprocket Wheel 22 is fixed rigidly to the trunnion 11 and through the trunnion 11 to the vessel 1. A sprocket chain, 23 passes around the stationaryhwheel 8, lover idler Wheels24 loosely rotating on arshaft 25 mounted at the angle of the-frame 2, and
around the `Wheel 22Which, as above stated, .is rigid'Wit-h the vessel l1.l l f l From the foregoing it Will be apparent that as the frame 2i and vesselflk are'rotated by means of the crank 6 the orbital travel of the` loop of chainv23 aboutt the stay-- tionary WheelS will impart-endwise movement tothe chain and, through its engage! *i ment withl Wheel 22, causerotation of vessel 1 on its longitudinal axis simultaneous with the rotation of the transverse axis' imparted by rotation oftrunnion 3.* -While Wehave referred to the use ofa sprocket ehain'the same result can be attained byak simple straight link chain` or other vform of `belt j passing over We claim: A y y 1 In device ofthe class described, a
yplain kor grooved p ulleyff4 vesselopen at one end,a removable cover for.
said openen'd, a pulleyffixedfto the opposite" Y Y y 'l end of said vessel, a supporting'rframe hav-1l 'Y ing' a bearing-for said pu1ley,.said frameVV comprising means having` rotative engage-y ment With the exterior of said vessel adjacent its openl end and coaxial Witli said comprising means liaving rotative engages,
ment with tlie exterior of said vessel adja-V 4cent its open endl and coaxial with said pulley, means for rotatively supporting said frame upon an axis at an angle to the axis of said pulley, a stationary pulley Wlieel and a belt in engagement with said stationary pulley and With saidV rst mentioned pulley iwhee i e `3. In a deviceof the class described, a vesh sel open at onek end, a removable cover for saidopen end, a trunnion at the opposite end of Vsaid vessel', a frame supporting said trunnion, anti-friction rollers mounted on said frame andy engaging tlieexterior of' said vessel adjacent its open end, means torrotaktively supporting said frame upon an axis at -an angleto the axis of said trunnion and means actuated by the rotation of said framev to cause rotation of: said vessel relative. to
saidA frame.
4; In a device of the class` described, a vessel open at one end, aV removable cover for -said open end, atrunnion at the opposite end of said vessel, a frame supporting said trunnion, a bearing. rail encircling said vessel near its open end, spring-pressed flanged anti-friction rollers engaging said rail, said spring pressure acting radially inward upon saidvesseland. toward said trunnion, means for rotatively supporting said frame upon an axis at an angle to the' axisi of said trunnion, andy means actuated4 by rotation of said frame to cause rotation of' said vessel rela-tive to said frame'. Y Y
. 5. In a device of the class'V described, a vessel open at `one end', a` removable cover-for said open end, a trunnion' at tlie'oppositev end of said vessel, a frame supporting said trunnion, a rail fixedI to and encircling said: vessel adjacent its open end, flanged antifriction rollers mounted on saidifra-mey and engaging said rail, said rollers being;v springA Dressed against said rail y means for rotas tively supporting said frame upon an axisV at an angle to the axis of said trunnion,A and means actuated by rotation of said f'raineto cause rotation of saidr vessel relative to,- said.y frame.
In testimony whereof, We have subscribed our names. p
