Abstract

Plant for the continuous treatment of material in open width comprises an impregnating apparatus, a washing apparatus and located therebetween, a turntable rotating about a vertical axis and having thermo-retention chambers, i.e. autoclaves, for the treatment of the material with superheated steam, mounted equally spaced around its periphery so that as the turntable rotates the chambers are passed successively from a charging position opposite the delivery side of the impregnating apparatus, to at least one intermediary position and finally to a discharging position opposite the receiving side of the washing apparatus. In the preferred embodiment, four such thermoretention chambers are provided, the arrangement being such that the directions of motion of the material leaving the impregnating device and entering the washing apparatus are at right angles to each other, and also that the longitudinal axes of any two adjacent chambers are at right angles to each other. The number of chambers and intermediate positions are so chosen that at each stage of rotation of the turntable, one chamber is in the charging position whilst another is in the discharging position. Intermittent rotation of the turntable is achieved by means of a pinion, driven by a geared motor, and meshing with a toothed rim provided on the turntable. A centrally located motor rotating with the turntable is provided for the rotation of rollers situated within the chambers, suitable means being provided for the connection of the chamber with fixed electric power leads and steam supply pipe. A suitable clutch pulley is provided for each chamber, firstly to connect the roller to the central motor for rotating during the charging of the material into the chamber, secondly to connect the roller to a motor associated with the chamber for rotation at the intermediate position, and thirdly to disconnect the roller for free rotation during the discharging of the material.
