IMPROVEMENT IN BALE-TIES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 171,302, dated December 21, 1875, application filed November 27, 1875.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RICHARDSON MONT- FORT, a resident and citizen of town of Blitler, in the county of Taylor and State of Georgia, have invented a new and valuable Iinprovement in Buckles for Wire Bale-Ties; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, refereuoe being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a plan view of my bale-tie, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof.

This invention hasrelation to improvements in buckles for Wire bale-ties; audit consists in the novel construction and arrangement of a metallic plate, having a lozenge-shaped slot and down-turned notched ends, whereby a means is provided for uniting the two ends of a wire-binder of greater efiiciency and reliability, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the annexed drawings, the letter A designates a rectangular metallic plate of suitable thickness, having a lozenge-shaped slot, a, cut therein, the longer diagonal of which is coincident with the long axis of the said plate. The ends of said plate are bent down, as shown at b, Fig. 2, and are provided with a notch, 0, formed on the lower edge of the said .bent portion, as shown in Fig. 1, for a purpose "which will hereinafter appear. These notches are in line with the acute angles of slot a.

The application and operation of my improved buckle, in connection with a wire binder, B, are as follows: The substance to be baled having been reduced to the desired size bypressure, the wire binder'is passed around it. One end of the said binder is then passed from below through slot at, is bent back and under bent lip 11, and inserted into notch 0 formed therein. The other end of the binder 'is likewise passed from below through the said slot, and having been drawn taut so as to take up the slack, is first bent over and backward, and thenpassed under the other lip b into its notch c. A sufficient number of the said binders having been thus applied to the baled mass the pressure is taken off, when the natural expansion of the bale will tighten all the ties, crowd the wire into the acute angular end t'of slot a, and force those portions of the said wire up against the upper end of notches c, at the same time confining them in the said notches. The upper end of the notches 0 will serve as biting-edges, which, g-ripinguponthe wires, will, with the addithe wire contained in the acute angular ends 2' of slot at, prevent the said binder from breaking loose from the buckle under any strains to which the bale would, in the ordinary course of transportation or handling, be subjected to. As shown, the ends of the binder are inserted into notches c, and will be confined therein; consequently the drawing out of the said ends by aohanoe application of a hook, whereby the hold of lip 11 thereon would be destroyed, and the tie loosened, is efi'ectually prevented.

Whatl claim as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The bale-tie buckle A, having lozengeshaped slot a, and downwardly-bent lips b, having slot 0, substantially as specified.

2. In combination with wire binder B the buckle-plate A, having slot to, downwardlybent ends I), and slots 0, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
