IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-LIFTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 171,249, dated December 21, 1875; application filed September 13,1875.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN SWEET, of the city and county of Providence, State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Lifters; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specication. i
Figure 1 is a view of a windowsash, showing my improved sash-lifter secured to the sides ofthe sash. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same, showing the sash in section.
a; is the curved shtail-shaped projecting arm. b is the base, having two screw-holes, by which the same is secured to the sash. l c is the window-sash; d, the glass of the window.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts. I
The invention has reference to and consists in a metal sash-lifter, formed of a base-plate and projecting arm, adapted to be secured to the side of a windowfsash, and used for the purpose of raising or 'lowering the sash. .r v
This sash-lifter is intended to be generally used in connection with' a Window-spring or sash-holder, the object Abeing'to so construct the same that the same lifter may be secured to either side ofthe sash.
In windows where the v sash is supported by a spring or sash-holder, without balanceweights, the saslicannot b'e raised or lowered untilthesash-holderis relieved. By placing my sash-lifter close to the lever of the sash-holder, the same maybe released and the sash Vsupported by one hand. Sash-holders or Vwindowsprings are secured at times to one and y at other times to the opposite Side ofthe sash.
Both right and left hand sash-litters are, therefore, required. Wide Windows also require a sash-lifter on each side ot' the window, so as stock of each kind, While it s difficult for buildy ers or other purchasers to ascertain the number of each kind required, thus causing trouble and delay to both merchant and purchaser. To overcome this difficulty I construct my sash-lifter so that the same may be used on either side of the sash, making both sides alike or reversible, as is fully shown in the drawings.
My sash-lifter consists of a base having two holes for screws, by which the same is secured to the sash, and a curved tishtailshaped projecting arm, under and behind which a finger is passed, so that the same hand by which the sash-holder*j is released also supports the sash, while the same may be placed and secured on either side of the window to thesash. Only one-kind need, therefore, be kept in stock, the same being reversible, and all annoyance and loss of time is avoided.
This sash-lifter can also be used on windows having the sash balanced by weights,
and materially assist in the raising or lowering ofthe same.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure bypLetterslPatent- As a new article of manufacture7 a reversible sash-lifter, consisting ot' the hase b and projecting arm c, adapted for attachment to the side of a window-sash, substantially as herein described.
