MEANS FOR SECURING RAILS T0 METAL SLEEPERS.

Methods of securing rails upon meta]. sleepers are known which consist in holding the rail by keying between hooks or clips projecting from and above the face of the plate and formed by stamping out.
In order to give a sufficient rigidity to these hooks it is necessary to employ sleepers having a relatively thick plate. More over, these hooks must be of a certain length so that it is necessary to make a fairly large hole in the said plate.
The material of the latter is therefore badly employed.
The invention provides in particular an arrangement for fastening down rails by gripping them by means of clips and keys which does not present the above mentioned disadvantages.
In the arrangement according to the invention, use is made of removable clips formed by members comprising a hollow or jaw in which are engaged and gripped a part of the rail foot and a part of the sleeper. i
The invention further comprises, in devices for fastening down rails in which use is made of an intermediate member between the sleeper and the rail, gripped against the latter by means of a key, for the introduction of the latter to be facilitated by arranging the parts between which it has to be wedged so that they are adapted to undergo a relative angular displacement.
This angular displacement may be obtained by arranging for the clip, in the jaw of which have to be engaged and gripped a part of the foot and a part of the sleeper, to
comprise, opposite this jaw, a cylindrical back part which is received in a hole of the same shape formed in the sleeper.
The accompanying drawings illustrate, simply by way of example, without forming a limitation, an embodiment of the invention, from the following description of which further features of the invention will be made clear.
In these drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view, with a part cut-away, of the fastening down clip device.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the angular displacement which the clip is adapted to effect.
Figs. 3 and 4- are elevations of clips adapted for use on the different sides of one and the same rail.
The rail 3 is secured to the sleeper 2 by means of a part 3 of the rail foot and a part 2 of the sleeper which are engaged and gripped in the jaw at of a clip 4.
This gripping action is obtained by means of a key l of varying section which is driven under the said. jaw between the foot and the aw 41-" of the U-shaped profile which the jaw, in the member i presents when viewed in elevation.
The presence of the key 4 tends, moreover, to press the back part 4 of the intermediate member or clip 4t against a stop 2" formed upon the sleeper 2 by the inner wall of a hole such as 2 provided in the plate of the sleeper at each of the points where the rail is to be secured.
The insertion of the key is facilitated by the fact that theclip 4L is adapted to make, relatively to the sleeper 2, a slight angular displ cement about the axis B,B,, as shown in Fig. 2 in which the clip 4 has turned through an angle V relatively to the axis of the sleeper.
For this purpose the back part 2 of this clip opposite the jaw P is cylindrical in form as also-is the back part 2 of the hole 2 in the sleeper 2.
The sleeper 2 comprises strengthening ribs 2 on either side of the holes such as 2,

The lower branch 46 of the U which the clip t formsin side view, engages between these ribs and is narrower than the distance which separates the latter so as to permit the angular displacement mentioned above to be obtained.
The intermediate members or clips such as 4 employed on either side of the rail may have different dimensions so as to permit, by simply changing clips, the position of the rail upon the sleeper to be altered.
In the case shown in Fig. 1 which may be considered as relating to the attachment of a rail on a straight part of the track, clips such as 4 shown in Fig. 3 disposed near the outside of the track, for example towards the left in Fig. 1 may be used.
The centre of curvature of the back part 4 of the clips such as 4; is disposed upon an axis B B, situated at a distance (Z from the inner face of the jaw 4 of the I clip.
. a curve, it is sufficient to change the clips 4 and 4; this change can obviously bemade i either for one line of rails, or for both.
As shown in the drawings, the-part of the clip 4 which continues the upper branch 4 of the same is larger than the part which Y continues the branch. 4.
The shoulder 4 thus formed bears upon I the upper face of the plate of the sleeper 2.
- The present invention extends in its application to industrial or commercial products which will be formed of members permitting the embodiment of a device for fastening down rails constructed and operating substantially in the manner described above.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention Q and in what manner the same is to be carried out, I-declare that what I claim is:
1. Means for securing rails upon metal sleepers comprising an intermediate memberv held;in gripping position by means of a key, the insertion of the key between the parts'in which it has to be wedged being facilitated by a relative angular displacement of the said parts.
2. Means for securing rails upon metal. sleepers, comprlsing an intermediate member held in gripping position by means of a key, the insertion of the key between the parts in which it has to be wedged being facilitated by a relative angular displacement of the above mentioned parts, this displacement being obtained by the fact that, the intermediate member or clip comprises, opposite the jaw in which are placed the above mentioned parts. a cylindrical back part which is received in a hole of the same shape situated in the sleeper.
3. Means for securing rails upon metal sleepers, comprising an intermediate member held in gripping position by means of a key, the insertion of the key between the parts in which it haste be wedged being facilitated by a relative angular displacement of the said parts, this displacement being obtained by the fact that the intermediate member or clip comprises. opposite the jaw in which are placed the above nientioned parts, a cylindrical back part which is placed in a hole of the same shape situated in the sleeper, the relative position of the axis of the cylinder t'orniii'ig the above back part and of the jaw of these same parts being ditl'erent according to the side of the rail upon which these parts are placed.
4. Clips for securing rails upon metal sleepers, comprising a U-shaped protile the back part of which is of a cylindrical form and one of the branches of which is of greater width than the other.
