Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. Brooms,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynch, in the county of Harlan and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvementsnn Metallic Ties, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a metallic tie.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of metallic cross ties for railroads and to provide a simple practical and efficient steel tie adapted to be easily and cheaply manufactured and equipped with means for effectually pro-- venting it from creeping longitudinally in a road bed.
WVith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts 0 hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claim, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of theinvention.

In the accompanying drawing, in which is illustrated the prefered embodiment of the invention, the steel tie comprises in its construction, a flat horizontal body plate 1, adapted to rest upon a road bed and provided at one side with a straight depending vertically disposed longitudinal side flange 2, adapted to be embedded in the material of the road bed. The other side of the tie is open, the tie being approximately L-shaped in cross section as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawing and in order to prevent the ties from creeping in a longitudinal di rection in the road bed, it is provided at its end portions with approximately L-shaped Serial No. 688,915.

The vertical flange which is preferably of a depth corresponding to the depth of the side flange 2 of the tie, extends downwardly from the lower face of the body plate and is disposed transversely of the tie and extends inwardly from the side edge of the body plate at the open side of the tie, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing. Any number of the anticreeping devices may be employedand the depending ballast engaging flange 3 is preferably oblong as shown in Fig. of the drawing. These anti-creeping devices preferably terminate short of the side flange 2 of the tie and are arranged in spaced relation with the same. Rails 6 are preferably secured to the upper face of the body plate by means of inner and outer clamps 7 and 8, consisting of attaching portions and rail engaging jaws which conform to the configuration of the web and base of the rail and engage the same. The outer rail clamp is preferably rigidly secured to the tie while the inner rail engaging clamp is preferably pivoted at 9 and detachably bolted at 10 to enable it to be readily swung into and out of position to facilitate the placing of the rails upon the tie and their removal there from. After the rails have been placed in position, the pivoted rail clamps are rigidly secured in position.
What is claimed is:
A. railroad tie comprising a horizontal body plate adapted to receive the rails and provided at one of its side edges with a depending longitudinal flange forming a vertical side wall, said tie being open along the other side edge of the body plate, and approximately L-shaped anti-creeping de vices having horizontal flanges secured to the lower face of the body plate, said anticreeping devices being also provided with depending vertical transversely disposed flanges extending inwardly from the open side edge of the body plate to a point be- In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
