..DISIPLAY LID FOR CONTAINERS.

In Figures 1 and 2 A designates fragmeu In the forni of the invention disclosed in tarily a cylindrical container formed or F i gures 5 and 6 the inner edge of the lower constructed at its upper end with an inwardring flange 6" is formed at predetcrmined 1y extending flange a. This type of container spaced points with relatively elongated strips is well known and a more detailed description of the material forming the lid edging", said thereof is not believed necessary. strips providing tongues 17 that are bent as Containers of this character are usually inwardly over the inner face of the flange 6" vided generally, a rigid edging of metal or other material and a central portion of transparent material, the edging being so con structed as to permit of the wedging of the lid within the container, or the disposition of.
the same over the open end of the container.
In the drawings wherein there is disclosed several embodiments of the present invention: I,
Figure 1 is a fragmentary upper end perspective of a circular container within which is arranged one form of the lid constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a detail horizontal section therethrough.
Figure 3 is a slightly modified form of the wedge design of lid.
Figure 4. is a fragmentary horizontal sec tion therethrough.
Figure 5 is a plan view of a still further modification.
F igure 6 a fragmentary horizontal. view thereof.
Figure 7 a plan view of a still further modification. i
Figure 8 is a fragmentary horizontal sec 'tion taken through Figure 7.
Figure 9 is a fragmentary perspective of the upper open end of a can over which is provided with metallic wedge type of lids that,
are adaptcdto be wedged within the flange. In the present instance the lid constructed in accordance With the present invention and disclosed inFigures 1 and 2 consists of a edge as at 8. The bead of this flange adapted for engagement upon the flange a of the con t ainer A when the said ring 5 of this type of lid is wedged within the container flange A. Arranged upon the inner face of the lid flange 6 is a ring 9 of cardboard,- paper, or other suitable material uponthe face of which is printed any SLHtttlQlO advertising indicia as disclosed in F igure 1.
Disposed within the ring 5 and resting upon the cardboardoi-paper ring9 is a disk 10 of plate glass, isinglass, or othersuitable trans parent material. After, this disk of transparent material 10 has been disposed within the ring 5 a steel wire ring 11 is wedged within the lid ring and into close engagement with the glass disk 10. The flangeeof the lid ring 5 is formed at spaced predetermined points with struck out tongues 12 that are bent upwardly alongside of the inner face of the ring 5 prior to the disposition of the ring 9, transparent disk 10 and ring 11 within the ring of the lid. After the wire ring 11 hasbeen disposed in position, the upper end of these tongues 17 are bent over intoengagement with the ring 11 as clearly indicated in both F igures 1 and 2.
Obviously if not desired, the advertisement carrying ring 9 may be dispensed with.
The forms of the invention disclosed in and thence upwardly as more clearly indicat:
ed in Figure 6. After the disposition of the steel wire ring 11" the upper ends of these tongues are turned over into engagen'ient with the ring for securely locking the same in engagement with the transparent disk 10".
In the form of the invention disclosed in Figures 7 and 8 there is welded or soldered to the inner face off the lid ring 5 and at the lower edge thereof relatively short strips of metal to provide tongues 17, these strips of metal being secured to the lid ring only at their lower ends so that after the steel wire rings 11 are disposed in position in engagement with the transparent dish 10 the upper ends of thesetongues may be bent over into engagement with the ring 11 for ecuring the same in position.
In the form disclosed in Figures 11 and 1'3 the transparent disk retaining wire ring li is soldered to the lid ring; at prede terinined sniall points throughout the eircun'rl erence thereof. These points ot connection are designated 17. Obviously the ring 11 is not soldered to the lid ring UIllTllflfiQCl the transparent has been disposed in position.
In the form of the invention disclosed in Figures 9 and 10 there is provided a slip type of lid, the same consisting; of a relatively large ring or hand 20 of sheet metal con strueted for disposition over the open upper end of acontainer B. The upper edge of this ring or band is formed with an inwardly extending flange 21, while arranged within said flange and selderedand welded in position therein is a structure designated generally by the reference character 21 similar to any type of the wedge form of lid indicated in the other figures of the drawings.
It willathushe seen that I have provided several highly novel, simple and useful forms of display lids for containers each of which is well adapted for the purposes designated, even though I have herein shown and described the invention in various forms as consisting of certain detail structural e einents, it is nevertheless to he undi )od that some changes may be made the 0111 without a2i'ectinn the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
laving' thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a container lid of the character described a rim, a disk oi transparent material a ranged within the rim, means associated with said rini for supporting the transi irent material therein, means for rigidly securing the transparent material within mid rim, said means consisting; of a wire ri snugl arranged within said rim, and projections on the rim adapted to be bent over the said wire ring for securing the same snugly against the trai'isparent material.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature.
