HOLDING DEVICEy FOR GROUN'DS.'
Appncation filed June 1e, 1927. sei-iai No. 199,174.
In concrete construction work used inconnection with buildings and the like a great many inner walls of buildings are being constructed of concrete making it rather diiticult to secure grounds or flush strips in place onsaid concrete walls to permit the attachment or' moldings, baseboards, and other khnishing members in place.
This invention. relates to, an improved holding device for grounds or flush strips used in connection with plastering to facilitate securing of moldings or other inishin'g members in place on concrete walls.
It is an object of this invention provide a simplified form of holder adapted to be partiallyembedded in a concretewall to receive` driven into the embedded holder to secure the same in place. f v
t is a further object of this invention to provide a slotted metalholder adapted to be embedded ina concrete wall ,with the slotted portion exposed to receive retaining nails for holding ground strips in place on a concrete wall 'for the attachment Lof moldings and the like.
it is an important object of this invention to provide a holder for ground o1' flush strips, said holder having projections or teeth thereon adapted to permit the holder to be secured to a wooden concrete form to permit the holder to be embedded in the concrete when it is poured `with a portion of the holder exposed in the surface of the concrete when the form illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.
On the drawings:`
Figure 1 illustrates an enlarged horizontal fragmentary sectionv taken through a con crete wall and the wooden Jform therefor illustrating a holder embodying the principles oi? this invention secured to the formv and embedded in the concrete.
Figure 2 isa perspective view of a fragmentary portion of a concrete wall and a woodenv form therefor illustratinga ground or flush strip holder partially embedded in theconcrete with a portion of the wooden form removed and also showing theprongs cfa sec# ond holder still embedded'in the portion of thewooden torni which has not been removed. Figure 3 is a detail vertical section taken. through the concrete on line III-HI of Figure l with the wooden `form removed- Figure 4 is a sectional view through a concrete wall and through a holder of this invention embedded therein, said holder having a retaining nail driven therein for holding a ground or tiushistripsecured in place.
- As shownon the drawings:
The reference numeral 1 indicates afwall or side of a wooden vform used for the conystruction of a concrete wall 2 against the e2;-
posed surface of-which it is desired to secure` a wooden ground or flush strip Sused in conis adapted to be secured in place by means of va nail 4l or othersuitable means, with the inner Aend of said nail adapted to be driven into the mouth or groove 5 provided inman improved holding device embodying the prin ciples of this invention and preteraljily. comprising a unitary str'ucture foi-'ined out of sheet metal or the like. Theholder isformed by bending a sheet of metal over upon itself totorni a pair oil' ywalls 6 and 7 connectedby a biglit portion 8. Each of the walls 6 and7 is formed with a plurality of parallel rounded ribs 9 separated by depressions or grooves so that each of saidwalls may` be considered as corrugated with the rear corruga'tions being the largest and those nearer the Jfront being gradually reduced in size. As illustrated, there are only two ribs or eorrugations formed in each ot the plates 6 and 7, with the front portionsof said plates forming a mouth piece l0 the end margins of whichl are bent at an P ATF-N OFIC E, ,i
angle to form flanges or lipsll. The bight portion 8 of the holder together with the corrugated plates 6 and 7 forms a spring member which acts to separate or open the mouth piece 10. To hold the mouth in a substantially closed position against the action of the spring portion of the holder a lug 121s struck from one end of each of said plates 6 and Tand is bent over or around the adjacent Vedge of the opposite plate, as illustrated in Figure 1, to hold the mouth plates secured together. The ends of the lips or flanges 1l of theholder are tapered and are bent outwardly at right angles to aflord'teeth or retaining lugs 13 which are adapted to be driven intothe inner face of the wooden wall l of a concrete form, as illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, to hold the holding device secured in a predetermined position with the flanges or lips ll of 'the holder lying fiat against the inner face of the form wall while the corrugated body portion ofthe holder projects into the chamber of the form so that when theform is lilled with concrete the body portion'of the holder will be coinpletely embedded in the concrete, as illustrated. Y
After the concrete has set the wooden form Vl is pulled away from the concrete andoff of '5 formed in the exposed portion of the holder.
The projecting teeth 13 at both ends of the lips or flanges 11 are now clipped or cut off flush with the outer or Vfront faces of the lips or flanges 11 and flush with the face of the concrete. A ground or flush strip 3 or a molding7 baseboard, or any other finishing strip may now be secured to the front face of the concrete wall 2 by means of nails 4 whichV are driven through the ground strip 3, as illustrated in Figure Zl, and have the pointed ends thereof driven into the opening or mouth 5 of the holder between the walls 6 and 7 forming the mouth piece. The corrugated bight portion of the holder acts as a spring for the mouth piece which when embedded in concrete is slightly compressed which allows the pointed ends of the vnails to be tightly wedged in the mouth piece to rigidly hold the ground strip 3 in place.
The improved holding device of this invention while described as an improved means for supporting or securing grounds or flush tion, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted thereon, otherwise than necessitatedby the prior art.
2 I claim as my invention: y
l. A holding device for ground strips and the like comprising a pair of corrugated plates integrally connected by a. bight portion, a mout-h piece integrally formed on said plates with the margins of the mouth piece bent to afford lips, and projections integrally formed on the ends of said lips at opposite sides of said mouth to permit the holding device to be secured to a concrete wooden form and to support the mouth duringembedding of the holding device in concrete.
2. A holding device for ground strips and the like comprising a spring body portion, a mouth piece integrally formed thereon, and
means formed on said mouth piece to permit Y the same to be secured toa wooden form for concrete and firmly held against distortion as it is embedded in the concrete when the form is filled. 1
3. A holding device for grounds comprising a corrugated spring body portion having oppositely flanged portions'forming a mouth piece, and teeth formed on said flanged portions at opposite sides of said mouth piece adapted to be removed after the holding device has been embedded in concrete. Y
4. A holding device for grounds compris ing a corrugated metal plate bent upon itself to form a. bight portion, and having two margins of the plate bent outwardly away from one another to form a mouth piece to receive ground retaining nails after the holding dcvice has been embedded in a wall, each of said margins having teeth projecting from its opposite ends, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name at Chicago, Cook County,
Illinois.
