IMPROVEMENT IN BRUSH-HOLDERS.

My invention relates to a device which is intended more particularly for application to a sweeping or scrubbing brush, but is applicable to brushes of various descriptions.

The invention consists in a holder of novel construction, made in two parts, one of which is attached to the brush, and the other to a handle, and provided with means for holding the two parts securely when together, and for detaching them when desired.

.'lhe accompanying. drawing illustrates the construction and operation of my invention.

Figure 1 is a top view of the fixed part of the holder attached to a brush. Fig. 2 is a Fig. 3 is a top view, showing the two parts secured tol gether and attached to the brush. Fig. 4 is a sectional View of the same.

The two parts ofv the holder are made of metal, either cast or wrought. The fixed part may be made of plate or sheet metal, and the detachable part of wire, or both parts may be made ot' castmetal.

A represents a plate, which may be of triangular form, or may have two branches extending' in somewhat the form of a letter Y. At the ends ofthe two branches, or two sides of the triangle, are overhanging lips b b, for engagement with the detachable part, as hereinafter' described. At or near the apex ofthe triangle, or the junction of the two branches, a button, C, is attached to the plate by a shank, c, the inner end of which passes through a hole in the plate, and serves as a pivot for the button to turn on. The portion of the shank between the plate and the head of the button is iiattened or elongated, so as to be wider than its thickness; and the button is provided with a thumb-piece, cx, or is otherwise constructed to facilitate turning oi' the same on its pivot. The plate thus constructed constitutes the iixed part ofthe holder, and is attached t the brush by screws.

The detachable part of the holder is represented in Figs. 2, 3, and 4 of the drawing as made of wire, and provided with a ferrule for the insertion of a handle. The wire D is in one piece, bent in a nearly triangular form, withits ends attach ed to the ferrule E. The ends ofthe wire do not come in actual contact with each other; but at the point where they approach each other to form the apex ot' the triangle is a slot-like space or opening, d, of a width corresponding with the narrowest portion ot' the shank c of the button on the lixed plate. Between the slot d and the ferrule the ends of the wire diverge, so as to form a space, e, wider than the greatest width of the shank c of the button. The wire D may be provided with a brace, f, extending from the ferrule to the base ofthe triangle, for the purpose of strengtheningand stii'ening the wire. The ferrule E may be elongated. so as to form a handle of itself', or may provide for the insertion of a handle of any suitable length. The wire is shown herein as bent in the most convenient form.; but said form may be varied without changing the nature and operation of the iuventlon.

The wire may be in two pieces, with the outer ends bent backward, forming two branches similar in shape tothe fixed pla-te, an-d each branch may be provided with a separate brace.

The detachable part D is connected and secured to the fixed part A by sliding it forward, so that the narrowest portion of the shank c will pass through the slot d, and the corners d of the wire frame will pass under the overhanging lips b of the plate A, and then turning the button C, so that its widest portion will lie in the space e transversely of the slot d.

By this means the two-parts are held securely together, and any backward, lateral, or upward displacement is prevented, and as the plate A is rigidly attached to the brush, the accidental displacement ofthe brush from the holder is impossible.

By turning the button, so as lto allow it to pass through the slot cl, the detachable portion may be removed from the fixed portion.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
