SECURING DEVICE.
Application filed March 27, 1928.
This invention relates to securing device. The principal object of this invention is to provide means for substituting for bolts.
A still further object is to provide means of holding two or more parts in a fixed relation to each other without the use of bolts.
One of the difiiculties in using bolts, is to provide means from keeping the same from becoming loose. In this device of mine it is not only practical to assemble the securing device in such a way as to hold parts to be secured, but a way is provided by which the securing device may be released from a securing position.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinaiter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a top plan view of this device as the same would be when in a securing position.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the device shown in a securing position holding a pair of fish plates in conjunction with a railroad rail.
Figure 3 is a cross section taken on line 33 of Figure 9 l is a cross section taken on line l r of: Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a detailed view showing the manner in which the device is assembled.
Figure 6 is a detailed view showing a perspective view or a part of Figure 2.
By referring to the drawing it will be seen that I have provided a body member 1 provided with wedge shaped ends 2 3. This body member 1 is provided with a shoulder 1 at point 5 of the wedge shaped end 3, this shoulder l functioning with a fish plate 8. This shoulder 42 is provided for the purpose of keeping the body member 1, from entering the round opening 7, and the oblong opening 9, beyond a desired point, in order that securing member 10, will have room to Serial No. 265,154.
be driven into a desired position as shown in Figure 2.
By referring to Figure 5 the manner in which the device is assembled may be more clearly followed. Numeral (3 represents a fish plate provide with a round opening 7. Numeral 8 represents an oppositely disposed fish plate provide with an oblong opening 9. The body member 1 is placed in position by being positioned within the round opening 7 and the oblong opening 9 of the fish plates 6 and 8 respectively. In order to hold this body member and connecting parts in a securing position, I have provided securing members 10. These securing members 10 are formed with flat surface on one side and a rounded surface 11 on the opposite side. An end 12 is f rmed in a tapered manner, the tapering starting at point 13 on the flat surface side and extending out to the extreme point 14.
By referring to Figure 2 it will be seen that two securing members 10 are used in pro ducing a correct assembly of the device. These securing members 12 are started as shown in Figure 5, one on each side of the wedge shaped member 3 and driven in until they take the form shown in Figure 1, the curvature and bending of the securing members 10 being caused by the limitation of the openings 7 and 9 in combination with the wedge ends 2 and 3.
ii Wren it is desired to remove the securing device from a. securing position all that is necessary to do to drive the securing members out by tapping on the extreme ends 1% of the securing members 10.
\"Vhat I claim is 1. In a device of the class described, the combinai ion of a body member provided with two wedge shaped ends, a shoulder formed on one of the wedge shaped ends for the purpose of holding the body memb r in a position so as to allow for proper wedging and securing means, pair of wedge members each member having one side flattened with the opposite side rounded, each of said wedge shaped members having a tapered end said taper starting from the flat surface side, substantially as described.
2. In a securing device comprising a body member, having two wedge shaped ends, a shoulder formed on one of said wedge shaped ends, for the purpose of holding the body member in a position so as to allow for proper Wedging and securing means, in combination with a pair of fish plates used for the purpose of holding a rail joint in correct position, a
pose of holding said fish plates in a securing position against ends of rails to be held in a secured position in order to form a rail joint, 10 substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
CARL F. DOERSGHUK.
