IMPROVEMENT IN HARNESS-SADDLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,870, dated December 7, 1875; application filed October 30, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN MAOLURE, of Newark, in the State of New Jersey, have invented certain lmproven'ientsin Harness-Saddles, of which the following is a full and exact description, having reference to the accompanying drawings.

My invention consists, first, in providing the leather jockey with a stiffening-plate of thin sheet-iron between its upper and its lining. so that it may retain its smoothness and position without being stitched or fastened otherwise than by the terret, and be lifted up without injury, to effect a change of trimmings; second, in the improved construction and means of attachment of the movable or extra housing; third, in constructing the padded flaps of the saddle in such a manner that they can be readily slipped on or off each side piece of the tree, and be packed compactly for shipment, and in giving this facility of close packing to the housing, the jockey and the flaps, all of which can be detached and packed Hat and close, the padded flaps npt being touched or sewed to the tree, all of which will fully hereinafter appear.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section, showing a finished saddle with the adjustable housing. Fig. 2 is a detail view, showing the detachable padded flap, partially slipped oft the tree. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are details, showing the metal shoes for at taching the housing to the saddle. Figs. 6 and 7 show the detachable and stiffened jockey ready for packing.

The construction, arrangement, and operation of my invention and all its parts are so fully and in detail shown in the drawings as to render further description needless.

My invention has among its advantages cheapness, strength, easiness to be worked, and the adaptability to be taken apart and packed closely for shipment.

What I claim as new is- 1. The metal plates 25 t, smaller than the jockey, and combined with each half of the, jockey, substantially as and for the purposes set forth, making a jockey, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7 2. The detachable skirting, having linings which form pockets for the reception of the tree, substantially as described.

3. The detachable housing V, provided with thin metal plates w, in combination with shoes 2 z, for the reception of the tenet-nuts, substantially as set forth.

4. The combination and arrangement of the jockey, detachable flaps, and adjustable housing, all readily removable, and capable of being flattened out for packing, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
