UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB N. BIOKEL, on TERRE HAUTE, INDIANA.
HORSE-COLLAR.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 260,827, dated July 11, 1882,
Application filed April 22, 1ss2. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J A0013 NICHOLAS BIoK- EL, of Terre Haute, in the county of Vigo and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Collars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompany ing drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional View.
Like letters of reference in both figures refer I to the corresponding parts.
This invention relates to horse-collars of that class which are provided with means for retaining the hame's in position and it consists in providing the neck-roll, which is'located at right angles to the shoulder-pad, with a continuous row of stitching, forming a welt di-- rectly in front of the shoulder-pad, said welt being provided with a wire filling or stiffener,
as will be hereinafter more fully described, and
particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the shoulder-cushion, and B the neckroll, of my improved horse-collar, which may be manufactured of leather in any suitable well-known manner. The outer edge of the neck-roll B, which may be described as being located in front of and at right angles to the shoulder-cushion A, isprovidedwith a seam, 0, extending entirely around the same and forming a welt, D, directly in frontof and parallel to the shoulder-cushion A, and in which is placed a wire or rod, E, extending entirely around the neck-roll and forming a stiffener, which absolutely prevents the displacement of the welt D. The Welt D forms a guard to hold the hames securely in place and prevent them from slipping off the collar.
This invention is exceedingly simple and effective for the purpose set forth, and it entails but slight additional expense, if any, in the manufacture of horse-collars.
I am aware that it is not new in a horsecollar to provide the neck-roll with an enlargement for the purpose of holding the hames in place. p
I am also aware that a horse-collar has been made in which the shoulder-pad, neck-roll, and an intermediate roll have been formed of a single bag properly stuffed and stitched.
Having-thus described myinvention,1claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- As an improvement in horse-collars, the
shoulder-cushion A, having neck-roll B, located JACOB NICHOLAS BIOKEL.
