MATTRESS.
Application filed April 27, 1927. Serial No. 186,901.
Our invention relates to'mattresses, more particularly bed or like mattresses, and the objects of our invention are: first,to provide a mattress of this class which has no external tufting; second, to provide a mattress of this class which has no dust-catching external plaits, third, to provide a mattress of this class which is provided with longitudinal and transverse cross reinforcing on the inner side of the mattress casing; fourth, to provide a mattress of this class which is provided with a plurality of cross folds at opposite sides inside this casing at the points where they are tied for reinforcing and supporting the tie cords; and fifth, to provide a device of this class which is simple of construction, durable, smooth surfaced, and sanitary.
WVith these and other ob 'ects in view, as will appear hereinafter, our invention con sists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions, as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon, which form a part of this application, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fragmentary portion of our mattress; Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view of one corner of the interior of the mattress casing, with the stuffing removed, and Fig. 8 is a further enlarged fragmentary sectional view thereof through 33 of Fig. 2.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts and portions throughout the several views of the drawings.
The casing 1, reinforcing strips 2 and 3, and tie cords 4L, constitute the principal parts and portions of our mattress.
The casing 1, which is preferably made of cloth, is composed of top and bottom portions 1 secured at their edges to side strips 1". The side strips 1 and the top and bottom portions 1 are sewed together so as toplace the edges of the seams toward the interior of the casing. Similarly the side strips are sewed together, as shown best in Fig. 2 of the drawings. On the top and bottom portions 1 of the mattress 1 are parallel, transversely spaced apart plaits 1 on which are secured reinforcing strips 2. The strips 2 are preferably made of cloth doubled against itself forming a fold and sewed to the plaits 1, preferably sewed at the same time the plait is being made. Similar strips 3 are sewed to parallel,
plaits, transversely,
longitudinally extending, spaced, apart plaits 1 ,which cross the plaits 1 and strips2; at
such intersections the strips 2 are tucked with the plaits-l all of which forms part of the plait 1 as shown best in Fig. 3 of the drawings, At the intersections of the reinforcing strips there are eight thicknesses of material. There the plaits 1 and 1 cross, there are twelve thicknesses of material, thereby forming strong reinforced points transversely and longitudinally spaced apart. With the corresponding intersections on both the top and bottom portions in approximately vertical alignment stu'liing is placed within the mattress and the ends of a cord 4 are threaded through the top and bottom portions of the casing, so that the ends straddle the'junction of the plaits and reinforcing strips. The free ends of the cords 4 which extend through the bottom portion 1 of the casing are drawn tight and tied. The cord 4 thus forms a loop, which straddles the strongly reinforced Junction of the two plaits with their reinforcing strips. It will be noted that the mattress as formed requires no external tufting to prevent the cords from tearing or pulling through the mattress casing.
Though we have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions, we do not wishto be limited to this particular construcsire to include in the scope of our invention,
the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a smooth faced externally tuftless mattress of the class described, a casing composed of top, bottom and side portions, longitudinally extending, spaced apart plaits, longitudinally, inwardly extending, spaced apart reinforcing strips secured to said plaits by stitching through saidtop or bottom portions, plaits, reinforcing strips, throughout the length of said plaits and reinforcing strips, transversely extending, spaced apart inwardly extending, spaced apart reinforcing strips secured to said plaits by stitching through said top or bottom portions, plaits, reinforcing strips, throughout the length of said plaits and reinforcing strips, stalling within said casin and tie cords without exterior tufts, QXtilQ tion, combination and arrangement, but deing thronghfsztid top and bottom portions adapted to straddle the correspondingintersection of said reinforcing strips and said plaits of said top and bottom portions and hold seamstress: in its desird"shapef 2. In a smooth faced externally tn ftl ess mattress of the class described, a casing composed of top, bottom and side portions, said top, bottom and side portions being secured togetherby internally extending,- se'zinis, longitndinally extending, spziced apart {folded plaits; longitndinolly, inwardly extending, spaced'apart folded reinforcing stripsseonred to said plaits transversely extending,
spaced apart folded Lplaits, transversely, in-
I i wal 'dly extending, spaced apart folded remforc ing strips secured to said 'plaits,'stuiing Within said casing, and tie cords Without-exterior ,tnfts,,e: tending through said top and bottonY fo'ld'ed plaits and longitudinally transversely folded reinforcing strips l 2 13 32111 Diego, Californiznthis 14th Y day of April; 1927, V
