Description

E. BARTON.
SPRING BEDBOTTOM.
I No 170,8 05, Patented De-c. 7,1875.

EDWIN BARTON, FLINT, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING BED-BOTTOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,805, dated December 7, 1875; application filed July 12, 1875.
peculiar construction and combination of the elastic rods and springs, as more full hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of my bed-bottom. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of one end of a rod and its spring, showing the manner of attachment thereto.
In the drawing, A represents around rod of any tough and resilient wood, havingascrewthread, a, cut on each end, which is screwed into the base of a strong spiral spring, B, whose coils have the same pitch as the thread. The free end of the spring is turned to form a loop, 12, which is slipped over a stud, 0, inserted in the upper edge of a bar, D, secured to the head or foot rail of a bedstead by means of the wood-screws d.
The rods should be short enough to put the springs under tension when the latter are hooked to the studs.
The slats being light and very elastic, conform to the outline of the occupant of the bed, while the springs aiford an elastic supportto the bed, which yields to every motion of the sleeper.
What I claim as my invention is The combination, with the bars 0, having vertical studs 0 on their tops, of the round Wooden rods A, having their ends threaded, and the spiral springs B, adapted to screw onto the ends of the said rods, and provided with loops b, when the several parts are constructed and arranged substantially as described and shown.
