CHARLES S. MORRISON, OF ELKINS PARK, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO PROCTOR & SCHWARTZ, INCORPORATED, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
TOGGLE.
Application filed April 27, 1928. Serial No. 273,352.
My invention relates to certain improvements in toggles used in stretching leather on frames. ln this type of toggle there is a hook at the back of the toggle which extends through one of the perforations in a supporting plate or through the meshes of a wire screen, so that when the toggle engages the leather the leather will be drawn tight and the hook can engage the frame.
An object of the present invention is to provide means for causing the tension of the .leather to actuate the gripping mechanism, so that as the leather shrinks, the grip of the toggle will be correspondingly increased.
The invention also relates to certain details of construction of parts which will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a side view of a toggle made in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view, longitudinally on the line 3 3, Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a front end view ofthe toggle;
Fig. 5 is a rear end view;
Fig. 6 is a detached perspective View of the upper jaw;
Fig. 7 is a detached perspective view of the upper aw operating lever;
Fig. S is a detached perspective vieW of the lower jaw; and
Fig. 9 is a detached perspective view of the operating plate of the lower jaw.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is the body of the toggle which is made of pressed sheet metal having a base 2, integral sides 3 3, and a looped rear section 4 which forms a handhold for the operator when using the toggle.
The upper portion of the handheld 4 is cut away at 5 to form lateral projections 6, which extend through perforations in the side members 3 3 and are riveted as shown so as to rigidly secure the upper portion of the handheld to the sides.
7 is an upper jaw mounted on a transverse pivot pin 8 which extends through two side members 3 3, the ends being riveted as shown in Fi g. 2. rlhe upper jaw is U-shaped in cross-section, and 'mounted on the pivot pin 8 is a coil spring 9, one end of which rests upon the jaw as shown in Fig. 3 and the other end bent to extend through a hole 10 in one of the side members 3.
The jaw 7 is held in the open position as shown in Fig. 3 by the spring 9, and is closed by an operating lever 11 shown in Fig. 7. The lever 11 is pivoted on a cross-bar 12 which extends from one side member to the other, the lever being provided with a roller 13 mounted on a cross-bar 14 extending from one side flange 15 yof the lever to the other side flange, as clearly shown in Fig. 7. rl`hiscross-bar rests under the heel of the jaw 7 and when the lever is moved from its raised position shown in Fig. 3 to the position shown in Fig. 1, it closes the jaw 7 and holds it in its closed position as shown in Fig. 1.
The lower jaw 16 is shaped as shown in Fig. 8 and has a serrated surface 17, the rear end oi' the jaw being rounded as shown at 18 so as to prevent the jaw cutting the leather when pressure is applied. The jaw has side 'members 19 which are perforated for the passage of a pivot pin 20. rThe serrated surface of the jaw is eccentric to this pivot, so that when itI is turned on the pivot it will grip the leather when the upper jaw 7 is closed.
A coil spring 21 is mounted on the pin 20. @ne arm of this pin rests against the underside of the lower jaw 16 while the other end of the spring rests against a plate 22 which is mounted on the base 2 of the body portion.
The plate 22 is notched at each side as shown at 23, and extending into each notch is a tongue 24 which projects from each side 19 of the lower jaw 16. lThese tongues preferably extend into slots 25 in the base 2 of the toggle.
Mounted on the cross-bar 12 is a hook 26. This hook extends through a slot 27 in the plate 22 and through a slot 28 in the base 2 of the body portion. The hook is shaped as shown in Fig. 3, and when the toggle grips the leather b, the tongue 26 is passed through one of the perforations in a supporting plate a as shown in Fig. 1. As pressure is applied the pull of the leather tends to place pressure upon the hook 26, the hook in turn moving the plate 22, and as the plate 22 is engaged by the tongues 24 the tension will turn the lower jaw on its pivot and increase its pressure upon the leather, thus increasing the grip of the toggle. The leather can be quickly released from the toggle by turning the lever 11 to the position shown in Fig. 3, when the upper j aw will be raised.
claim:
1. The combination in a toggle, of a body portion; an eccentric lower jaw and an 'upper jaw; means 'ror clamping leather between thev two" jaws; a h'ool: pivetall'y mounted on the body portion and extending,` therefrom; and a vplate engaged bythe hook and by the 'lower jaw; so that when tension is applied to the leather' the hook will move the lower jaw through the plate.
2. The combination in a toggle; of a body portion forming a handheld vand having,` side members; an upper jaw pivotally mounted on said side men'rbe'rs; an eccentric lower jaw pivotally mounted lon. theside members; aspring tei'idin'glto close the jaw against the upper jaw; and a. lever 4also pivotally mounted on 'said side members and ar ran ged to bear' upon the 'heel o't the upper jaw to force ittowards the lower jaw.
The coin'liination in a toggle; et a body porton having;v side members and a bent handheld attachedat its' free end to the side members; an "eccentric Vlower jaw pivoted to the4 side" members; an upper aw also pivo'ted tosaidside' members located opposite the lowcrjaw; alever pivoted to the side membersandhaving'a roller arranged to bear againstlthe heel 'ofthe upper j aw and close iti upon the leather inserted between the twe jaws; a fspringt'ending to open 'the upper jaw; and a'spring tending` to close the lower aw.
lf 'llh'e 'combination in atoggle; of a body portipn' having side members and a bent handl'fol'd attachedy at its free end to the side members; an eccentric lower jaw piveted to the side members; an upper jaw also pivoted to said side members located opposite the lower jaw; a lever pivoted to the side members and having. aroller arranged to bear against lthe=heel of theupper jaw and close it uponfthe *leather inserted between the two jaws; a spring- 'tending to open the upper jaw; a spring tending to close the 4lower jaw; a loosely mounted hook extending through a slot in the body portion; anda slotted plate through' which the hook'extends; the lower jaw being connected to 'said 'plate and/arranged to be moved lbythe hoot: through the `medium ofthe `plate when tension is applied to the leather gripped between. Ythe jaws.
'l`he combination in a' toggle; of a body portion; a serrated lower jaw eccentrically mounted on'tlre' body portion and having a projecting tongue; a notched plate through which the tongue pr0jects;lsaid platebeing arranged to slide on the body portion; a pivoted hook extending through a slot in the plate and through' a slot in the the body portieri; a pivoted upper jaw; and a lever pivoted to the side members ofthe body portion and arranged to bear against the heel o' the upper jaw; the bearing ofthe lever against the upper jaw 'being such that when the leveris closed the upper jaw" will be held in its closed position.'-
CHARLES S: MORRISON.
