CURRY-COMB. Ng 170,735 Patented Dec. 7,1875.

ATTOR N EYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. HOTCHKISS, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN CURRY-COMBS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,735, dated December 7, 1875; application filed October 23, 1875.
CASE A.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. Ho'roH- KISS, of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Curry-Combs; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description of the con struction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representa tion of a longitudinal vertical section of my curry-comb, and Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of a modification thereof, and Fig. 4 is a plan View of its handle-iron.
This invention has relation to curry-combs which are constructed with rigid graspinghandles; and the nature of my invention consists in a curry-combhaving a rigid handle, at one end of which is formed an inclined thumb-rest, as will be hereinafter explained.
In the annexed drawings, A designates the frame of a curry-comb, which may be made as represented by Figs. 1. and 2, or it may be made in any other suitable manner. This frame A is constructed of one piece of sheet metal, stiffened by the combblades, and also by bending down its ends. B designates the handle of the comb, which is grasped with the fingers and thumb, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1. This handle is made longer than the width of the comb-frame, and its shape is peculiar-tl1at is to say, one end of it is raised higher than the other, and formed with an inclined thumb-rest, a, which extends beyond the edge of the comb-frame, and which forms an obtuse angle with the plane of the back of this frame.
The handle constructed as described enables a person to grasp the instrument firmly, and to use it conveniently.
Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings show a modification of my invention, which I contemplate adopting when a wooden handle is required. This consists in prolonging the raised end of the handle B, so as to form a tang, which is inserted into the wooden handle C.
What 1 claim as my invention, and desire. to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The handle B, attached at both ends to the curry-comb frame, said handle being bent. as shown, to extend beyond the side of the frame, forming an obtuse angle with the frame, and also an inclined thumb-rest, a, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES A. HOTCHKISS.
