Description

March 19, 1929 J. SZRAZ PIPE Filed Sept. l5, 1927 INVENTOR John Sraz I A ORNEY Patented Mar. 19, 1929.
JOHN SZRAZ, 0F HERSCHEL, SASKATCHEVJAN, CANADA..
PIPE.
Application filed September 15, 1927. Serial No. 219,595.
.This invention relates generally to smoking pipes, and has more particular reference to readily cleanable smoking pipes.
The inventionhas for an object the provision of a readil i cleanable smoking pipe of simple construction and arrangement of parts which may be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
When a pipe is smoked the bowl becomes charred and gives an unpleasant odor. The inner sides of the bowl may be scraped to remove this charring. The pipe is adapted for thorough and convenient scraping and cleaning by providing a removable closure at the bottom of the bowl.
For further comprehension of the invention and of the objects and advantages thereof reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
Referring to the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. l is a perspective view of a pipe constructed according to this invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but disclosing' a modified form of the invention.
Fig. et is another similar view, disclosing another modification.
Fig. 5 is another similar View, disclosing another modification.
' Fig. 6 is another similar view disclosing another modification, but in this view a fragmentary portion of the front ofthe pipe is shown.
Fig. 7 is a longitudinal central vertical sectional view of a pipe constructed according to a modification of the invention.
Fig. 8 is a vertical sectional view, talren on the line 8 8 of Fig. 7.
The reference numeral l0 indicates generally Athe bowl of a pipe having a. stem 1l with mouth piece l2 connected therewith. The bowl l() has a customary top opening 13, and a special bottom opening 14, preferabl Y tapered", and closed by a cork or stopper l5 forced therein.
In Fig. 8 the stopper 15 is formed of a cover portion 16 and a filler portion 17.
In Fig. 4 the bowl 10 has a threaded bottom opening 14 and a stopper l5n threadedly engages therein.
The modiication of the invention disclosed in Fig. 5 illustrates the bottom opening 14e of the bowl l0, closed by a cover 18 hingedly connected to the bowl at 19, and provided with a small projection 2O engaging in a niche 2l in the bowl. YJv/*hen the cover is forced open about hinge 19, the projection 2O is forced from engagement in the niche 2l.
ln Fig. 6, the bowl 10u has elongated recesses 22 communicating with its outer side, and hooks 23 are provided at their upper ends in these recesses, as at 2%. rlhe lower ends of the hooks project through apertures 25 into the bowl, and engage in a peripheral groove 26 in the stopper 15b engaged in the bottom opening 14D of bowl 10a. The hooks 23 may be manually moved to disengage from the peripheral groove 26, and then the stopper may be drawn from the bottom of the bowl.
Figs. 7 and S illustrate a pipe with a bowl 27 having an aperture 2S at its bottom, threadedly engaged by a stopper 29 integral with stem 30 which has a mouthpiece 3l connected thereto. rlhe bowl is formed with elongated recesses 22, and hooks 23 are pivoted at their upper ends in these recesses, as at 24. The lower ends of the hooks project through apertures 25 and engage in apertures 26a in the stopper 29.
The operation of the invention consists in removing the stoppers so that the bowls may be cleaned of charrings, by scraping, or the like. Upon replacing the stoppers the pipe is ready for use, and the bowls may be filled with tobacco.
While I have shown and described the preferred form of my apparatus as example of the many ways of practically constructing the same, it is to be understood, that such changes may be made in the general arrangement and in the construct-ion of the minor details thereof, as fall within the scope of the appended claims, without departure from the principle involved.
Having thus described my invention what l claim as new and desire to secure by United tates Letters Patent is:
l. In a pipe of the class described, a pipe bowl formed with recesses extending from near the top edge thereof, downwards along the outside to near the bottom edge, and then inwards to the interior of the bowl, and an ranged for housing pivotal clamping hooks against projecting outwards from the surf2 Y d 1,706,262
face of the bowl, and the said clamping hooks pivotallv mounted in the said recesses, and being adapted for holding a bottom stopper arranged for normally lying within the outer in the pipe bowl. surface of the bowl, and adapted for holding l0 2. In a pipe of the lclass described, a pipe a bottom stopper in the bowl. 5 bowl formed with recesses extending down- In testimony whereof I have aXed my wards along the outside and then inwards to Y signature. the interior of the bowl, and clamping hooks v JOHN SZARAZ.
