JOHN M. I-IOTHERSALL, or BROOKLYN, NEW @YORK, ssIeNon To AMERICAN CAN COMPANY, or NEW YORK, N. .Y A CORPORATION or NEW JERSEY.
TALoUM-roWn R CAN.
Application filed rebruar ir. 1922. Serial No. 535,907.
This invention relates in generalto talcum powder cans, and has more particular reference to the provision of a cap closure for such a can provided with a gasket secured in place in peculiarly elfective'manner.
A principal object of the invention is the provision of an improved method and con struction of a talcumpowder can top-which provides a tight closure preventing the escape of powder when the parts are in closed relationship. 1
Numerous other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description, which, taken in connectionwith theaccompanying bodiment thereof. 7
Referring to the drawings,
Figure 1 is a vertical section through the cap and container top; 5
Fig. 2 is a plan-view of the container;
' Fig. 3 is abottom plan view ofthe cap;
I and Fig. 4 is a section taken transversely there through. I
For the purpose of illustration, I have shown on the drawings a container body 11.
of generally oval formation, provided with an inclined top portion 12 to which is suit-' ably secured at 13 a neck 14 having a per-' forated top part 15. A. cap 16, which may be of any desired peripheral configuration, is 'rotatably fitted upon the neck 14, the top part of said cap being perforated to correspond to theperforations of the top part 15 when in registration therewith.
A gasket 17 is seated in the top of the cap and serves to prevent leakage of the. powder.
Whenfthe respective perforationsof the container top part and cap are out of registration, or in otherwords, iniclosed position. It will be noted that the cap is provided with a central upwardly extending recess 18 which, in the present instance, is of hexagonal form, though it will be understood that the exact form may be varied, being preferably, however, of non-circular or irregular outline. The gasket is formed to shape corresponding to the shape of the re. cess 18in the cap and fits closely against the top part 15 seatedin said recess.
In order to secure the gasket in place with-- out special holding means, I place it upon the metal blank, from which the capis to be drawings, discloses a preferred em formed, prior to the formative operation" thereon, andthe forming .dies serve to shape.
the gasket and metal cap together in such manner that said gasket is securely held in the recess 18 in the finished cap. The gasket flange 19 extends beyond said recess and preferably into closecontact with the vertical wall 21 of the cap and is thus .held against removal by said walland by the hexagonal Walls 22 ofthe recess. I have found that when assembled in this manner the gasket remains securely held in place under conditions of service, and the economy of manufacture in accordance with the method described will be obvious.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made 111 the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from.
the spirit and scope of, the invention or sacrificing all of its material advantages, the
form hereinbefore described being merely a. preferred embodiment thereof.
1. A talcum powder can, comprising a body having a perforated toppart, and a perforated cap rotatably fitting said top part, sardcap havlnga polygonal recess and being provided with a gasket'seated in said recess and held in place by the Walls thereof.
- 2. A talcum powder can, comprising a body having a perforated top part, and a perforated cap rotatably fitting said top' part, said cap having a polygonal recess and belngprovided with a gasket seated in said recess and held in place by the walls thereof,
and said top part having a central portion fitting in said'gasket'l ned recess.
3..A talcum powder can, comprising a body having a perforated top part, and a perforated cap rotatably fitting said top part, said caphavinga polygonal recess and being providedwith a gasket seated in said recessand held in place by the walls thereof,
said gasket extending beyond said recess and having its edges in engagement with the vertical Wall ofthe cap. I 4. A talcum powder can, comprising a body, a top having a raised central perforated portion forming an upwardly extend in'gprojection, and a cap having a raised and perforated central portion forming an body, perforated top part and a cap i'otatably fitting upon said top part andprovided with an interior non-circular gasketho lding top part, and a" gasket secured in place by being drawn with the metal of the cap to the finished non-circular forniof the interior of the top of the cap.
6. The combination of a cap having a noncircular recess formed on the underside of its top, a gasket non-rotatably fitted in said recess, said top and gasket being correspondingly perforated, and a neck on Which said cap is rotatably fitted and having a top fittingagai'nst said gasket and perforated to correspond with the perforations of said cap and gasket.
