CLUSURE FOR SIFTER-TOP SANS.
My invention relates to closures for talcum powder cans, its main object being the provision of a closure which will effectively close the sifter openings by very simple closing operation and which is adapted to be formed economically by reason of the ease of the manufacturing operations required.
()ther objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better run derstood fron the following description,
which, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, discloses a preferred em bodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawings,
Figure l is side elevation of a container in which my invention. is embodied, the cap being shown in separated relationship;
F 2 is a top plan view thereof with the cap removed; and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation, a part thereof being broken away and shown in section for convenience in illustration.
The container body 11 may be of any preferred form, being shown, however, as of the oblong shape now commonly in use. A top 19, is provided with a depending flange 18 engaging over the top of the body and held in place by friction, or by any desired form of connection. A neck i l is secured in a circular opening in the central part of the top 153, the connection, in the present inbeing provided by means of a shoulder 15 on the exterior of said top and a flange (not shown) criinped against the in terior of the top about said opening. Sifter openings 16 are formed in the top of said neck in any desired number or arrangement.
A removable cap 1'? is provided to close the sifter openings and a sealing disk 18 of felt, or the like, is seated in the top of said cap.
As a means of tightening said cap upon the neck 14, I provide interrupted threads 19 struck outwardly from the wall of said neck and embossed points 21 struck inwardly at intervals in the wall 22 of said cap.
The
threads 19 are inclined from the horizontal, and upon the cap being positioned with the points 21 between the threads 19 and rotated. it is forced downwardly until the liner 18 is tightly held upon the top 01"" the neck, thus effectively closing the sitter open- The threads 19 and embossed points 21, of course, may be easily formed by merely pressing the metal 111 the manner indicated and the cost of production is, therefore, very small.
I claim A closure for talcum powder cans, comprising a sheet metal neck part having a rounded top provided with sifter openings therein and with interrputed inclined threads bent outwardly from the cylindrical wall of said neck, an iinperforate cap having a rounded top conforn'iing with said top of the neck and rounded downward closely over the edge of the neck and thence bulged outward and thence bent inward to form a securing flange close to the neck, and inwardly ext en din GYRbOSSlHGIltS OX1 flange adapted to engage under said threads of the neck, and a sealing disk tightly and permanently confined 1n the cap under the top thereof.
JOHN M. HOTHERSALL.
