CLOSURE SEAT FOB METALLIC CONTAINERS. A
Application filed November 16, 1925. Serial No. 69,292.
This invention relates to an improvement barrels used in oil shipping and the like, the primaryobject of the invention being to provide an improved construction of closure seat with which a plug or closure member is vAnother object of the co-operable. V invention is n providing an improved method ofsecuring the closure seat to the barrel.
A further object of the invention is in providing an improved method of interengaging portions of the barrel with the closure seat for preventing the closure seat being turned during the mounting or removing the lu to or from the closure seat,
A still further object of the invention is in providing stiffening means to the barrel i material surrounding the closure seat.
Other and further obJects will appear in the specification and be specifically pointed Y fying the invention,
said opening i being tion4 of the closure seat out in the appended claims, had to the accompanying reference being drawings, exempliand in which Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section taken through a portion of the barrel head showing this improved. closure seat thereto.
secured Figure 2 is a fragmentary plan view of is a fragmentary 'plan view of a portion of the barrel head which surrounds the opening provided in the head and showing portions formed in the head for co-operation with theclosure seat.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings, sheet metal barrel 1 designates a portion of .a head having an opening 2 formed therein, the material surrounding depended downwardly forming a neck 3, and mounted in said opening is a depending annular portion 4 of a closure seat 5, said portlon 4 being threaded interiorly as designated at 6.
The closure seat 5 isprovided with a plu- -rality of elongated openings 7iwhich arearranged circumferentially in the horizontal fiange'i ings being for the reception ofraised portion 8 rel head 1. The from the countersunk rel*head 1.
.Mounted over adapted to be rolled over the lower of the portion 4 each of said opena respective which is formed on the barraised portions 8 are formed portion 9 of the barthe depending annular por- 5 is a collar 10, and edge of pending neck, a closure seat havin In theuse of the ordinary type of closure seats with a co-operatmg plug, large wrenches are engaged on the plug with considerable force, and quite often the sealing connection of the closure seat With the barrel isbroken, and the closure seat permitted to turn in, the barrel opening thus making it difiicultto removethe plug as well as causing a leak between the barrel head and the closure. seat. With this improved closure seat. the seat will be prevented from turning by reason of theraised portions 8 being in interengagement with the openings 7 of the closure seat, and the plug can always be tightened ,or removed in the closure seat without loosening the seat and causing a leak. t For providing means for securing an identifying tagor the like to the barrel, or for sealing the plug to the closure seat, a portion 11 of the flange 7 adjacent one of the openings 7 is bent upwardly, thereby providing an aperture 12 between the barrel head 1 and theportion 11, said aperture being for the reception of the wire fthe indentifying tag.
If it is desired a is obvious that a gasket,
1. A sheet metal container having an aperture formed in one of its walls, a closure seat having an interiorly threaded body portion located in the aperture of said wall,
said wall having a counter-sunk part formed around the aperture thereof, said body portion of said closure seat having an out- &
wardly extending ,fiange which is seated in said counter-sunk part, said flange of said body portion being provided with a plurality of openings, and a plurality of raised portions formed in' said wall for engagement with respective openings of said flange,
2. A sheet metal container having an aperture formed in one of its walls, the material surrounding said aperture forming a dean interiorly threaded body portion an having an apertured outwardly extending flange mounted in the aperture of said wall, and a plurality of raised portions formed in said wall arranged circumferentially of said neck, each being for engagement with a respective aperture of said flange of said body portion.
3. A sheet metal container having an aperture formed in one of its walls, the material surrounding said aperture forming a depending neck, a closure seat having an interiorly threaded body portion and having an outwardly extending apertured flange mounted in the aperture of said ivall, and a plurality of raised portions formed in said wall arranged circumferentially of said neck,
eachbeing for engagement with a respectiveaperture of said flange of said body portion, said body bendable portion for underengaging the lower end of said neck.
4. A sheet metal container having an aperture formed in one of its walls, the material surrounding said aperture forming a depending neck, a' closure seat having aninteriorly threaded body portion and having an outwardly extending apertured flange -mounted in the aperture of said wal'1,- -a plurality of raised portions formed in said portion having an outwardly.
' pending neck, a closure seat having an interiorly threaded body portion depended in said neck, a reinforcing collarmounted over said neck, the marginal edge of said body portion depending beyond said neck and rolled against the lower edge of said neck and said collar.
6. A sheet metal container having an aperture' formed in one of its walls, a closure seat having an interiorly threaded body portion and having an annular flange extending therefrom located in the a erture of said wall, said flange of said bo portion being provided with a plurality of openings, and a plurality of raised portions formed in said-wall for engagement with the openings of said flange.
