IMPROVEMENT IN II-IAMES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,530, dated November 30, 1875; application filed May 3, 1875.

Be it known that I, ABRAM F. DAVIS, of Liscomb, in the county of Marshall and State of Iowa, have invented certain Improvements in Hames for Harness, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to provide a means of adjusting hame-straps to fit the hames to collars and horses of different sizes Without unbuckling the straps.
It consists in forming cavities in the hames, and inclosing therein plates having projecting pins and springs to operate the plates, to alternately engage and free loops connected with the hame-straps, all as hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure 1 of my drawing is a view of a longitudinal central section of the top end of a hame, and illustrates the manner of forming and applying my plate and spring.
A represents the wooden hame. B is the elongated cavity in the wood designed to receive the plate and spring. a a is a metal strap inclosing the wood, and is secured to V the wood A by nails or screws, or in any suitable way. I) is the adjustable plate, carrying the series of pins 1 2 3. These pins may be cast solid with the plate, or can be rigidly attached in any suitable way. The plate or strap a, which covers the cavity B, is perforated to allow the pins 1 2 3 to project through to engage a sliding loop. 0 represents a spring, inclosed under the plate b in the cavity B in such a manner that it will press the plate forward, and cause the pins to project through the perforations in the strap a. This spring 0 may be a leaf-spring, a coilspring, or a rubber spring, so formed and applied that it will automatically hold the plate and its pins in the position required, and also allow adjustment when necessary.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view, illustrating the operation of my improvement.
G is one of the sliding loops, buckled to, and carried by, the harne-strap D. In the practical use of my improvement the loops 0 are passed over the top ends of the hames A, and allowed to rest between two of the pins projecting from the plate b. To raise and lower the loops 0, and thereby lengthen and shorten the hames to fit collars of various lengths, press the series of pins 1 2 3 and the plate b into the cavity B, and slide the loops 0 to the positions required, and then allow the spring 0 to press the plate and'pins to their former positions to hold the loops. A simple and convenient means is thus provided for raising and lowering the hame-strap and fitting the hames to various collars and horses without unbucklin g the strap.
I am aware that notched or serrated plates and sliding loops have been used for the purposes contemplated; but I claim that my manner of applying and operating a plate having projecting pins is new and greatly advantageous.
I claim as my invention- The hame A, having the cavity B, the perforated plate or metal strap a a, covering the cavity B, the plate b I), having the series of projecting pins 1 2 3, and the concealed sprin g 0, when arranged and combined substantially as and for the purposes shown and described.
