IMPROVEMENT IN HANIE-COUPLINGS.

Be it known that I, JOHN HENRY CARLISLE, of Craigsville, in the county of Augustafand Stateot' Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hame-Conplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which fol-n1 a part of this specification. The object of my invention is to rapidly open and close the haines, and to render them less liable to come open by accident. This is accomplished by a movable lever, A, as shown in Figure 1, which works as a hinge through the curved link U attached at B B. D is a fricbolt, E, and a perpendicular screw, c, as `shown in Fig. z, and upon which rest the feet of the lever A at I I. H is a tlattened ring, made square at one end and round at the other, to
prevent the strap from being cut against the friction-plate D, andwhich connects the hames by a strap. Have thepstrap well secured to the right haine; then pass it through the link H, which is over the lever A, while reversed in position, andwhile in that position it is held by the-curved link C, Which admits of vibration, if necessary. The strap is then tightened, and in order to make it more secure the lever A should be moved into its proper position, which produces the result desired.
. I claim as my invention- 1. The combination in a haine-fastening apparatus, substantially as described, of a footed lever and curved link with a friction-plate and a link, formed square at one end and round at the other, to work over the saine.
2. The footed lever A, secured to the plate D by the hinged link C, and adapted to operate substantially as described.
