STIFFENING MEMBER ON SIROCCO FAN CASING.
Application filed August 2, 1928. Serial No. 297,028.
' My invention relates to blowers and particularly to casings therefor.
, It is the object of my invention to provide a casing of great strength, light Weight, and ease of manufacture.
7 It is a further object to provide a casing which will maintain the side walls thereof against pulsating or breathing movement.
It is a still further object to provide such a casing in which the bearing supports are suitably mounted upon the same reinforcing that is utilized to support and reinforce the side walls of the casing, thereby tying the structure together into an integral one, with a maximum of strength and minimumofvibration, while at the same time providing for rapidity and ease of manufacture which are veryessential in maintaining the cost at such a point as to make the production of such casings economical and feasible.
It is a further object to provide a construction which eliminates riveting and bolting and will not have a tendency to become loosened between the bracing and the side walls of the casing.
Referring to the drawings,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the casing and its bracing.
Figure 2 is an end elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 1, showing-the single bearing type utilized in my invention.
Figure 4 is a side elevation of the casing from the inlet side. v Figure 5 is a side elevation in detail from the bearing side, with the bearing casting removed.
Figure 6 is a side elevation from the inlet side of the casing with the reinforcing for the double bearing.
Figure 7 is a view of the casing utilizing the double bearing showing the casing from the opposite side to that shown in Figure 6.
Figure 8 is a section on the line 8-8 of Figure 6.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 is a side wall of a casing for a blower, such side walls being located on the side carrying the single bearing. 2 is the opposite side wall in which is located one of the openings for the blower. 3 designates a scroll end wall which is provided with an opening 4: for the blower. 5 designates the fan mounted on the fan shaft 6. This fan shaft 6 carrying the collar 7 is supported in the bearing 8 mounted on the bracket 9. This bracket 9 is provided with a web 10 having a plurality of attaching bolts 11 for attaching it to the supporting cup 12. This cup 12 is welded as at 18, to the side wall 1. It is also welded as at 14;, to the radiating braces 15, the inner sides of which are welded asat 16 to the surface of the side wall 1:. Thesebraces are tapered and form a radial like truss. By reason of this construction the Side wall 1 is prevented fromvibrating, breathing or weaving due to the fan operation.
.A truss-like support is provided for the cup 12 which'acts as the support-for the bearing bracket and bearing 8 of the fan shaft 6.
The opposite wall 2 is provided with similar braces 17. These braces are welded as at 18, to the sidewall 2 and as at 19 to the ring 20, which in turn supports the flaring air guiding member 21.
Referring to Figures 6, 7 and 8, it will be noted that the cup 12 is provided with a transverse bracket plate 22,on which is mounted a bracket 23 that pivotally supports at 24 a shaft bearing 25 for the shaft 6. On the other side a similar bearing 26 is pivotally mounted at 27 upon a similar bracket 23 upon a cross plate 28 that is supported by a vertically disposed brace plate 29, such cross plate '28 and brace plate 29 being welded at their ends to the ring 20. Collars 3O maintain the shaft 6 in its proper position with respect to the bearings 25 and 26. Thus the bracing through the braces 15 and 17 in this form serve to support the bearings at either end of the fan-shaft. All of the weight and vibration is thus distributed through the radio truss- like supports 15 and 17 which are welded to side Walls 1 and 2 and become an integral part thereof.
It will be noted that the brace 29 has one of the radial braces 17 ,such as 17*, projected directly beneath it to the foundation or floor. The other braces tie the corners of the structure together so that a truss is formed for supporting the ring 20.
It will be understood that I desire to comprehend Within my invention all the modifications and changes necessary to adapt it to varying conditions and uses;
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. In a blower casing, the combination of end walls and side walls, a plurality of reinforcing strips attached on theirinner edges to the side walls and projecting laterally therefrom, said strips being progressively greater in depth from their outer extremities towards their inner extremities, a ring connecting the inner extremities of said strips, said ring being attached to the side wall in which it is located, and meansfor sup porting a fan shaft bearing in said ring,'said ring, strips and side walls being integrally welded to one another.
2. In a blower casing, an end wall and side 7 walls, a plurality of radiallydisposed sheet metal plates welded on their inner edges to the outer surface of the side walls and a ring connecting the inner ends of said metal plates to one another and to the side walls, and a bearing support detachably supported in said ring. a V

In combination in a blower a blower casing consisting of end walls, side walls, one of said side walls having an inlet opening and one of said end Walls having an exit opening, a plurality of plates arranged at right angles to the side walls, having their inner, edges engaging the surfaces of the side walls welded thereto, a cup shaped member inserted through an opning in one of said side walls,
, welded to said side wall and to the inner end of said plates, a bearing mounted in said cup shaped member, a shaft mounted therein carrying a fan adjacent the inlet opening, a second set of plates weld-ed at right angles to the surface of the other side wall, a ring connectingthe ends thereof, welded to thesec- 0nd side wall adjacent its inlet opening, and a guidin shield in said inlet openingcarried by saic ring for delivering the air through the fan to the blower.
4:. In combination, a casing having end walls, side walls and diagonally disposed braces consisting of plates at right angles to the side walls, the inner edges ofthe plates being welded to the side wall surfaces, rings supported by the inner ends of said plates and said side walls, bearings mounted in said rings and a fan and fan shaft carried onsaid bearings.
5. In combination, a casing having end walls, side walls, and diagonally disposed braces consisting of plates at right angles to the side walls, the inner edges of the plates being welded to the side Wall surfaces, rings supported by the inner ends, of said plates and said side walls, bearings mounted in said rings, a fan and fan shaft carried on said bearings, and transverse supporting plates bisecting a portionof said ringsfor supporting said bearings. p
6. In combination, a casing having end walls, side walls and diagonally disposed braces consisting of plates at right angles to the side walls, the inner edges of the plates being welded to the side wall surfaces, rings supported by the inner ends of said plates and said side walls, bearings mountedin said rings, a fan and fan shaft carried on said bearings, and transverse supporting plates bisecting a portion of said rings for supporting said bea 'ings,'one of said bisecting plates having a vertical support between it and the ring. r v
7. In combination, a casing having end walls, side walls and diagonally disposed braces consisting of plates at right angles to the side walls, the inner edges of the plates vertical position and the remaining portion are in a diagonally disposed position. 7
8. In combination in a blower, a casing having-endwalls and side walls, one of said side walls having an opening, a ring welded to said side wall to define said opening, a plurality of reinforcing plates welded along their inner edges to the surface of the side walls at right angles thereto, a portion of said plates being, arranged to connect the corners of the side walls to the ring, and an intermediate vertically disposed plate arranged to cooperate in supporting a bearing carried by the ring, a transverse bearing plate in said ringand a vertical supporting plate for the transverse plate in said ring, said vertical plate being superimposed above the vertical plate on the outside of the ring.
