IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTER-PACKAGES.

Specification forming partof Letters Patent No. 170,50l, dated November 30, 1875; application filed 4 July 21, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY P. ADAMS, of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packages for Butter, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improved box or package for preservation or transportation of butter.

In the drawing is shown a longitudinal section of my invention, which consists of the following parts and combinations, as hereinafter specified and claimed, wherein A is an outside casing of wood; B, a suitable lid or cover; 0, an inner lining of tin or other suitable metal; E E, bolts or clamps for closing and sealing the package. F is an intermediate layer of damp pasteboard or any suitable membrane resting between the up per surface of the case A and cover B.

It will be observed that the metallic lining 0 covers the inside, entire, of the case A, and likewise the sides of the opening a, upon the upper face of which it is lapped and secured.

Through the top of the package, upon either side of the mouth a, are extended the screwbolts E, provided with the nuts 6. The bolts E are made stationary, and are caused to pass up through the lid or cover B, which is secured by means of the nuts 0, as shown in the drawing.

A piece of damp pasteboard or any suitable membrane is placed over the mouth a, between the top of the case A and its cover B. Thus, when the nuts 6 are tightened, it will obviously appear that the contents ot'the package will be etfectuall y sealed against leakage, or theadmission of air or dirt.

By continuing the metal lining of my pack age, so that it shall protectand cover not only the cavity of the package, but likewise the sides of the neck or opening, and by forming upon the upper side of the package a flange or bearing, 0, it is impossible that any leakage should occur, inasmuch as said flange cforms a bearing superior to that which would be aft'orded by the wooden casing A, and which, so far as I am aware, is novel and original with myself.

This construction likewise serves to render the entire package more strong and durable, and more easily kept clean and pure for repeated and continued use, and likewise eflects a means whereby the package may be quickly and surely closed tight.

What I claim is As a new article of manufacture, the butter-package constructed of the casing A, with metallic lining G, terminating in the flange c, in combination With the lid'B, clamps E e, and interposed pasteboard packing, substantially as and for the purpose described.
