IMPROVEMENT IN COVERS FOR WATER-COOLERS, &c.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,417 7., dated November 30, 1875; application filed November 1, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDGAR B. JEWETT, of Bufi'alo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have'invented an Improved Cover for Water-Coolers, Filters, Ice-Pitchers, Wa-

-ter-Pails, and the like; and I do hereby declare that the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forms a full and exact specification, wherein are set forth the nature and object of my invention, and the mode by which it is carried into effect.

My present invention relates to improvements on covers for water-receptacles, whereby the same is converted into and made to serve the purpose of a waste-water receptacle and a drainer and stand for a tumbler. In order to obtain this result I provide a cooler, &c., cover, with an annular depression or gutter in its apex, having a number of perforations or passages leading therefrom in to the interior of said cover, said gutter serving as a rest for a tumbler and to collect the wastewater and drippings, and the interior of the cover answering the purpose of a receptacle for such waste-water.

To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention pertains to make and use the same, I shall proceed to describeits construction, thereby referring to the drawings hereinbefore mentioned, in which- Figure l is a sectional elevation, and Fig. 2 a plan, of my improved cover.

Like letters of reference indicate like parts in both figures.

A is the top, and B the bottom, of my cover. These parts I produce in the usual manner, of any materialsusceptible of being spun or pressed, zinc, however, being deemed preferable, and unite them by lapping the edge of the top over that of the bottom and soldering the joint. The top A is of a convex contour, and has in its apex an annular depression or gutter, O, of a nearly semicircular transverse section, spun .or pressed therein, and of such diameter as to accommodate any one of the ordinary-sized tumblers placed inversely into said gutter. The gutter O I supply with a number of perforations, D, leading into the interior of the cover. E is the knob or ornamental top. It serves as a guide for the tumbler when being placed upon the cover.

The bottom B is of a dish-like shape, its base being sunk considerably below its horizontal edge, where it unites with the top A. This I find necessary to increase the interior space of the cover sufficiently to hold the necessary quantity of waste-water without raising or increasing the convexity of the top A, which cannot be done without affecting the appearance of the cover and endangering the metal of the said top, which, being spun or pressed from a disk, yields only to a certain extent.

It will be readily seen that a cover constructed as described serves the further purpose of a waste-water receptacle or reservoir, and as a tumblerstand and drainer, and that the waste-water contained in said reservoir can be easily discharged through the perforations 0.

If desired, a separate discharge-opening, properly plugged, may be provided to discharge the contents of said cover. a

The improvements, as described, add comparatively nothing to the cost of the cover, while they materially enhance its usefulness, and enable the dispensation of a separate or detached tumbler-stand and drainer. It is furthermore applicable to all the various kinds of covers for water-coolers, filters, ice-pitchers, 85c.

Having thus fully described my invention, I desire to secure to me by Letters Patent of the United States As an improved article of manufacture, a combined cover, waste-water receptacle, tumbler-stand, and drainer, consisting ofthe convex top A, having the knob E centrally in its apex, surrounded with an annular depression or gutter, O, of a curved or concave transverse section, provided with perforations D, and the bottom B, having its base sunk below its horizontal edge, the parts being united substantially as described.
