This invention relates to improvements in identifiers for attachment to articles to identity the same and particularly to such devices used in connection with laundry systems for attachment to the various articles to identify them accordin to any approved method of routing the articles through the various steps of laundry process.

'More specifically, this invention relates to an identiier of the aw or clamp type adapted to be clamped upon the article beyond the edge thereof and to be removable therefrom but securely attached thereto so as to'pass through the various nrachinesused in the laundry.

Theioentifier of this application is of a type comprising a pair of spring clamping jaws rigit y joined, hinged or otherwise secured to ether and preferably of the selfopening type arranged so that a securing means for the jaws may be provided beyond the edge of the material to hold the identifier firmly in position upon the article.

of a grommet or eyelet, comprises the shank 13 and fixed flange 14, this flange nesting in one of the recesses 12 and the shank being adapted to pass through the openings 11 of both of'the clamping portions or jaws 2 and '7. The shank 13 is also provided with one or more inner pro ections 15 forming square shoulders 16 adapted for use in the removal of the grommet or eyelet, aswill appear.

When the grommet or eyelet is inserted in the clamping portions or jaws, the outer end of the shank is swaged over to form a. flange shown at the top in Fig. 4, for engagement in the other recess 12 of the other clamping portion or jaw. It is obvious that when the groinmet or eyelet is being applied, as shown partially in Fig. 3, asuitable support 17, provided with an opening'18, will support the identifier and a punch 19 with a reduced shank 20 will serve to carry the eyelet down through the openings in the clamping portions or jaws ready for the lower end of the shank to be spread or swaged out against the suitably tormedsurface 21 provided about the opening 18 in the support 17. By properly arranging the parts the grommet or eyelet will cause the clamping portions or aws to be firmly clamped upon the article with the proper tension to produce and form a firm'grip between the marker and the artiole. The article thus identified can pass freely through the machines in the laundering process and any machine exerting pressure upon the identifier, as for instance, an ironing machine, will tend to more firmly clamp the identifier upon the article and may, in

some cases, produce a further setting up of the eyelet andamore rigid clamping action between the identifier and the article.

When the identifier is to be removed it is placed in reversed position above a suitable support 22 provided with an opening 23 larger than the flanges of the grommet or eyelet. Another plunger 24,- having. a pilot 25 of the size of the bore of the shank of the grommet or eyelet, is then caused to move down into engagement with the shoulders 16, whereupon the flange formodon the end of the shank oi the eyelet will be turned back to shank forming position and tl e eyeletwill readily pass out through'the opening 23 in the support 22.

The identifier is then ready for re-use.

YVhat I claim is:

1. A marker for repeated use, on articles to be subjected to laundry and like treatment comprising aclarnp having hinged aws each having a clainplng portion for engagement with the work, and aligned openings between the hinge and the clamping portions of the jaws and outside of the work engaging area thereof for the reception of a grommet for securing the clamp upon the work.

2. A .marker as in claim 1 wherein the clamping jaws are uniformly flat throughout and are provided upon their outer sides with ings and having its'flanges engagingin the recesses around the opening.

4. A marker as in claim 1 wherein the grommet openings are provided with a grom-.
