SACK TIE.
APPLICATION FILED AUGJFI I913- ]Patented M1120, 1915.
THE NORRIS PETERS 60.. PHO1D-LITHQ. WASHINGTUN. D. c
CHARLES PARIDY, OF IBELLEVILLE, ILLINOIS.
SACK-T11];
Application filed August 11, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES PARIDY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Belleville, St. Clair county, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in SaclnTies, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to an improved removable tying device to be used in tying sacks, bags, and similar receptacles, and the object of my invention is to provide an improved sack tie which may be quickly and conveniently adjusted to and removed from the package, tied and untied, and which shall be durable and of small cost.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the principal parts of my improved sack tie separated; Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the parts assembled as in use when tying the sack; Fig. 3 is a front elevation of a portion of a sack tie with my improved sack tie; and Fig. 4t is a sectional side elevation of a portion of a sack tied with my improved sack tie.
The numeral 1 indicates a flat thin strip or ribbon of soft metal, preferably steel, having suflicient length to pass around the mouth of a sack and having an aperture 2 adjacent one end through which is passed a suitable bolt or screw 3, for the purpose of securing said metal strip to a clamping jaw 4c.
I make use of a pair of mating clamping jaws 4 and 5 respectively, which are adapted to clamp between them the paper of fabric of the sack 6, said screw 3 being passed through an aperture 7 in the said clamping jaw 4:, and threaded into an aperture 5 of the opposite jaw 5, as shown more clearly in Fig. 4.
The clamping jaw 5 is provided with an integral dowel pin 6, which projects into a suitable aperture 9 formed in the front clamping jaw 4.
The said strip 1 is provided at intervals of its length with a series of buttonholeshaped apertures 10, and the free end of said strip is folded upon itself, and the superimposed folds are clamped securely together by means of a suitable rivet 11 which passes through all of the folds, whereby there is formed at the free end of said strip an enlargement which is adapted to act as a hand- Specification of Letters Patent.

hold or handle in stretching the strip around the sack during the act of tying and untying the sack.
The operation is as follows: The sack tie is applied to the sack by placing the clamping jaw 5 within the sack near its mouth, then placing the front clamping aw 4 on the exterior of the sack directly opposite the location of the said jaw 5, causing the sharpened dowel pin 8 to perforate the fabric of the sack and pass into the registering aperture 9 of the said front jaw; then the screw 3 is passed into the perforations 2 of the said strip and thence into the perforations 7 of the front jaw 4, and is caused to perforate the fabric of the sack and enter the registering threaded aperture 5 of the inner jaw 5 until a shoulder 12 on said screw comes into contact with the outer surface of the said front jaw, and has its movement thereby limited.
This construction holds the head of the screw 3 a distance fromthe outer surface of the said front jaw 4, and yet the jaws are secured together in position upon the sack. Then the mouth of the sack is gathered, as shown in Fig. 3, and the free end of the said strip is passed around the neck of the sack and is drawn tightly around the same and secured by buttoning the strip upon the projecting head of the said screw 3.
Of course it will be observed that the strip may be tightened or loosened by locating different buttonholes 10 upon said screw head.
I claim;
1. In a detachable sack-tie, a pair of clamping-jaws, a suitable tie-strip having a series of apertures at various points in its length, a sharpened dowel pin projecting from one of the said jaws and adapted to perforate the sack-material and enter into an aperture in the opposite jaw; and a device for performing the three functions of detachably clamping said jaws upon the sack-material after said dowel-pin has acted to perforate said sack-material, to secure one end of said tie-strip to one of said aws,
and to engage one of said apertures in said tie-strip in adjusting said strip around a sack in tying said sack.
2. In a detachable sack-tie, a pair of clamping-jaws, a dowel-pin connection therefor; a suitable tie-strip having a series of apertures at various points in its length; and a screw having a stop-shoulder and a1- ranged for performing the three functions In testimony whereof, I have Signed my of detachably clamping said aWs upon a name to this specification, in presence of two sack, to secure one end of the said tie-strip subscribing Witnesses.
to the outer one of said jaws, and to engage CHARLES PARIDY. any of the series of apertures in said tie- Witnesses: strip during the operation of adjusting said E. L. VVALLAGE, strip around a sack in tying a sack. E. M. HARRINGTON.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. 0.
