This invention relates to improvements in mining apparatus, particularly coal cutting machines and trolleys therefor. The invention has for its main object to enable a mining machine of the swinging jib type to be used for cutting in any of two or more planes. More particularly the invention has for its object to provide means whereby a self-contained mining machine of a type adapted to slide upon a surlace thereof over a mine bottom may be truck mounted in such a manner that it can be rotated about its longitudinal axis relatively to the truck to alter the plane of cut of the swingable cutting mechanism carried by the said machine. The invention also aims to provide means for efiecting truck propulsion from the motor in the machine and for adjusting the machine relatively to the truck by the said motor.
The present invention comprises a trolley or truck that is so constructed as to receive the machine and to retain such machine in different angular positions into which it is adjustable by rotation about its longitu-' dinal axis relatively to the trolley in such manner as to alter the position in space of the cutting plane of the cutters.
T 1e invention also comprises the combination of a coal-cutting machine of the swinging jib type, a trolley having upon it a mounting which is a cylindric trough or virtual trough with its axis parallel to the length of the machine, and means secured to the machine and projecting into said trough or virtual trough to constitute a trunnion for the machine.
By the term virtual trough is meant a mountin the bearing-surface of which may be constituted, for example, by a plurality of rollers or other anti-friction members which are so arranged that those portions of their surfaces which are engaged by the means aforesaid are arranged to lie on the curve of an imaginary trough which will prevent the trunnion from dropping during its rotation;
According to a feature of the invention, there is combined with the trunnion and the trough or virtual trough an endwise movable bolt having its bearing in one of them and being capable of movement into and out of corresponding holes in the other, and
of being actuated from one end of the machine. The holes may be disposed angularly apart from one another and the bolt engaged by its own bearing can also be en gaged with one or other of these holes to lock the machine securely in various positions to which it has been rotatably adjusted about the longitudinal axis thereof.
According to a further feature of the invention there is provided the combination with the trunnions of flanged claws secured on the trolley and overlapping the trunnions in opposite directions from opposite sides thereof, and means for operating the claws, for example, a single bolt in screwthreaded engagement with said claws. These claws when. in engagementwith the trunnions serve to prevent the machine from separating from the trolley, but when they are disengaged from the trunnions the 1nachine is free to be lifted off the trolley.
Other objects and features of the invention will be apparent from the following description of forms of apparatus constructed in accordance with the invention.

Referring first to Figure 1, it will be seen that the trolley 1 is provided with a mounting 2 in the form of a trough and-to the underside of the coal-cutting machine 3, of a type hereinafter mentioned, there is detachably secured as by suitable screws, bolts or the like a complementarily curved attachment 4 which extends also over one lateral surface of the machine. The machineB may be readily detached from'the' attachments a and dismounted from the trolley. This attachment constitutes a trunnion for the ma-I chine. Theattachment is such that it, with the machine, may be revolved in the trough secured to the trolley about the longitudinal axis of the machine so that the plane of the swingable jib or cutter bar, indicated by 5, may be turned to any position in space from a horizontal to a vertical posit-ion, the extension of the attachment around one lateral surface of the machine enabling a full movement of 90 to be obtained. It will be understood that when the jib lies in the vertical plane, as shown in chain-dotted lines, the machine can be used for shearing.
In place of the trough-mounting above described a plurality of rollers may be used to bear against the cylindric attachment portion 1 borne by the machine. Alternatively, as shown in Figure 2, the machine itself is provided with rollers 6 carried by the attachment 1-. These rollers engage the trough 2 on the trolley and constitute a virtual trunnion.
In both of the above-des'ribed constructions a stop 7 on the trolley is arranged to engage the machine when in its horizontal position and limit its movement in one direction. Any suitable means, such as hereinafter described, may be employed to lock the machine securely in its horizontal and vertical positions or in any intermediate position if this is desired.
Referring now to Figures 3, 4t and 5, it
will be seen that the machine 3 is provided with a pair of trunnions constituted by T section attachments 4, (Figure 3) each of which rests on a pair of rollers 8 rotatably mounted in a cradle 9 secured to the trolley 1 and forming a virtual trough or bearing for the trunnion. The arrangement of these rollers is clearly shown in Figure 5, from which it will be observed that the two rollers for each trl'lnnion are so spaced that the bearing surface of the trunnion rests on them both throughout the rolling movement of the machine from its horizontal to its vertical position and vice versa.
In order to lock the machine in either of its adjusted positions two sliding bolts 10 are provided, each of which engages holes 11 in the upstanding lugs 12 on the cradle and passes through a hole in the attach ments 4. Two such holes are shown at 13 in Figure 5 and it will be understood that another hole 13 lies behind and in line with the hole 11. As shown, the bolts can be ma ment of the machine relatively to the trolley.
To prevent the machine from accidentally separating from the trolley at anytime there are provided, in combination with each trunnion, two flanged claws 1 1 travelling above 15 on the cradle 9, and overlapping the flanges of the T-section attachment 4t in opposit-e directions from its opposite sides as clearly shown on one of the trunnions in Figure 3. These claws are engaged one with the other by a single rightand left-handed screw-bolt 16 which is supported in a sleeve 17 on the cradle. The bolt is manipulated to secure or release the machine by means of a key or spanner which may be engaged with the head 20. I
To prevent the machine from shifting endwise there are abutments 18 and 19 formed shoulders on the cradle and trolley respectively; against these the end faces of the trunnions bear.
The rotation of the machine about its longitudinal axis in the trolley can be effected manuall if desired, or it may be effected mechanically. The machine shown in Figure 3 is of the'kind described in the specification of one Morris P. Holmes Ser. No. 619,839, filed Feb. 19, 1923, and comprises an elongated generally rectangular body normally adapted to slide on its bottom surface 3 directly on the mine bottom and Within which the usual driving motor is housed and carrying cutting and feeding mechanisms driven by this motor. The cutter bar 5 is pivotally mounted on this body for swinging movement relative thereto as clearly described in the above mentioned application.
The machine also has a driving-member in the form of sprocket-wheel 21 for the purpose of actuating the flexible feeding means of the machine herein preferably a feed chain 21. This wheel is disposed at one end of the machine on a horizontal shaft 22 which is driven by the motor of the machine. This shaft also carries loose on it a chain-sprocket 23 provided on one side with dog-clutch teeth 24 and an operating collar 25 whereby it may be moved into and out of engagement with the teeth 26' on the iember 27 fast on the shaft. In a mining apparatus, a truck having running gear, a self-contained mining machine of a type adapted to slide upon a surface thereof over a mine, bottom means for adjustably supporting said machine on said truck for rotation on a horizontal longitudinal axis, and reversible driving gearing for said running gear driven by said lOO adjustably supporting said. machine on said truck: for rotation on a horizontal longitudinal axis, and reversible driving gearing for said running gear driven by said power transmitting element and disposed beneath and between the ends of the mining machine.

In a mining apparatus, a truck having running gear, a self-contained mining machine of a type adapted to slide upon a surface thereof over a mine bottom and pro vided with a power transmitting element rotating on a longitudinal axis, means for adjustably supporting said machine on said truck for rotation on a horizontal longitudinal axis coincident with saidfirst mentioned longitudinal axis, and reversible driving gearing for said running gear drivon by said power transmitting element and disposed beneath and between the ends of the mining machine, said reversible driving gearing including reversely rotating bevel gears rotating on a transverse axis and selectively operative as the driving element, a longitudinally extending shaft having a bevel pinion meshing with said bevel gears, and a flexible connection between said power transmitting element and longitudinal shaft.

In a mining apparatus, a portable support, a body mounted thereon, a motor carried thereby, cutting mechanism carried by said body and driven by said motor, and means for adjustably supporting said body on said support for rotation about a horizontal longitudinal axis coincident with the axis of said motor including cooperating arcuate guiding means carried by said support and body and including cooperating rollers rotatable on axes disposed in a surface coaxial with the centre from which said arcuate guiding means is struck.
34. In a mining apparatus, a portable support, a body mounted thereon, a motor carried thereby, cutting mechanism carried by said body and driven by said motor, and means for adjustably supporting said body. and said support for rotation about a horizontal longitudinal axis coincident with the axis of said motor including arcuate guiding means secured to said body and a plurality of cooperating rollers carried by said support and cooperating with said guiding means.
35. In a mining apparatus, a portable support, a body mounted thereon, a motor carried thereby, cutting mechanism carried by said body and driven by said motor, arcuate guiding members secured to said body for supporting the latter for rotation about its longitudinal axis coincident with the axis of said motor, an cooperating rollers mounted on said support at opposite sides of a vertical longitudinally extending plane passing through the centre of mass of said body.
36. In a mining apparatus, a portable support, a body mounted thereon, a motor carried thereby, cutting mechanism carried by said body and driven by said motor, arcuate guiding members secured to said body for supporting the latter for rotation about its longitudinal axis, cooperating rollers mounted on said support at opposite sides of a vertical longitudinally extending lane passing through the centre of mass 0 said body, and means onsaid support intermediate said rollers and directly engaging said arcuate guiding members for maintaining said arcuate guiding means against vertical displacement With respect to said rollers.

In a mining apparatus, a portable support, a body mounted thereon, a motor carried thereby, cutting mechanism carried bysaid body and driven by said motor, arouate guiding members secured to said body, cooperating guiding rollers mounted upon said support, and means on said support including locking elements directly engaging said arcuate members to prevent longitudinal movement of said body on said support in either direction.
43.111 a mining apparatus, a portable support providing means forming a cradle, a body mounted on said support, a motor carried thereby, cutting mechanism carried by said body and driven by said motor, arcuate guiding means secured to said body and supported in said cradle whereby said body may be rotated about its longitudinal through substantially a quadrant, and locking means for rigidly connecting said cradle and said arcuate guiding means including locking elements directly engaging the latter in interlocking relation to main tain said body in different adjusted positions.
44.111 a minin apparatus, a portable support, a body mounted thereon, a motor carried by said body, cutting mechanism carried by said body and driven by said motor, means tor adjustably supporting said body on said support for rotation about a horizontal longituoinal axis including arcuate guiding means secured to said body and cooperating guiding means mounted on said support supporting said arcuate guiding means, and locking means cooperating With said arcuate guiding means including locking elements directly engaging the latter in interlocking relation for maintainin the latter in o"erat1ve relation about said cooperating guiding means.

In a mining apparatus, a portabie support, a body mounted thereon, a motor carried by said body, cutting mechanism carried by said body and driven by said motor, means for adjustabiy supporting said body on said support for rotation about a horizontal longitudinal axis inciuding arcua-te guiding means secured to said body and cooperating guiding means mounted on said support supporting said arcuate guiding -1neans, and locking means cooperating with said arcuate guiding means including locking elements directly engaging the latter in interlocking reiation for reieasabiy maintaining the latter in operative relation to said cooperating guiding means.

In a mining apparatus, a portable support, a body rotatabiy mounted thereon, a motor carried thereby, cutting mechanism and feeding ,mechanisnr carried by said body and driven by said motor, said feeding mechanism including .a rotatable element, and means for holding said rotatable elementagainst movement relative to said support to permit said motor to react through said feeding mechanism to etiect rotation of said body reiative to said support.

In a mining apparatus, a Wheeled support, a body mounted thereon, a motor carried thereby, cutting mechanism and feeding mechanisi'n carried said body and driven by said motor, driving connec tions between said feeding mechai'iisin and the Wheeis of said support, means for rotatably supporting said body on said support, and neans for rendering said wheel driving connections immovable thereby to cause said motor to r act through said feeding mechanism to ei rotation of said body relative to said support.
