My invention relates to mining machines.
It has for its object to provide improved means whereby a mine, face may be cut at increased speed and with greater facility. A further object of my invention is to provide improved means whereby a lierf may be cut in the face of an entry in such a manner as to facilitate the shooting and loading of coal, at the same time that the area of the kerf, and the time consumed in cutting the same, is materially reduced. I attain these objects by providing an improved mechanism adapted to be readily transported about the mine to and from the different places to be cut and including improved means whereby the same may cut inan improved manner a vertical or shear cut in the face extending in entry work from substantially the top thereof to the'entry bottom and preferably disposed along the center line of the entry, Q

It will also be observed that means for adjusting the bar about its pivot 17 are provided in the form of a feeding element, herein shown as a flexible element or chain 20 operatively connectable to a fixed part 21 on the bar 2 and having its rear end disposable around either idler of a pair of idlers 22 located at opposite corners of the rear end of the frame and also around the adjacent driving sprocket 13, the position of the chain depending upon whether it isdesired to raise or lower the bar. As in the usual construction, it will of course be understood that the motor of the mining machine 1 is operatively connected to both the cutter chain 3 and the feed sprocket 13 in the usual manner to provide power to rotate these elements, which are driven from opposite ends of the motor, and that a suitable clutch mechanism including the reverse lever 16 and the controlling member 23 is provided tocontrol the connection of the chain 3 to the mining machine.
In the operation of my improved machine, the same is preferably driven by its truck driving mechanism and under its own power down the track 9 and into the entry to be extendechthe track preferably being so laid that the bar is disposed in the center of the entry. During this transporting operation, the rear end of the feeding element 20 is withdrawn from the sprocket 13, as shown in Fig. 7, to permit the latter to be freely rotated to propel the shaft 12, and the bar 2 preferably occupies the position shown in that figure, the same remaining in that position until the end of the bar has been brought substantially opposite the end of the track and substantially into engagement with the vertical face of the entry to be out. When this position has been reached, the
operator first threads the chain 20 over the upper idler 22 and around the driving sprocket 13 and then, through suitable operation of the usual feed controlling elements, causes the feed sprocket 18 to be rotated in such a manner as to draw in its flexible feeding member 20 and, after the pin 19 has been withdrawn, cause the bar 2 to be swung up until its extremity is disposed substantially in the plane of the top of the entry, i. e. until it occupies the position shown in Fig. 8, which is the position which the parts occupy when the machine is ready to make its starting out. In a preferred form, the bar is then locked in this position by means of the reinsertion of the pin 19. The sumping cut is then made through operation of the clutch 11, insuch a manner as to cause the truck 7 to be prov pelled along the track 9 until the bar has throughout its length, and until the truck 7 has reached the position at the end of the track rails indicated in Fig. 9. In this position of the parts, the truck 7 is next made stationary, as for instance by the use of one or more suitable jacks 24. Then, through a reversal of the flexible connection 20 so that the same extends back beneath the machine and around the other idler 22 and the sprocket 13, the bar 2 is swung downward from the position shown in Fig. 9 to the position shown in Fig. 10 to cut its swinging or vertical cut extending in the form of an arc from the top of the entry to the bottom thereof. As soon as this cut is completed,the braking mechanism is preferably released and thereafter, through the connection of the clutch 11 and the reversal of the driving sprocket 13, the machine is propelled backward while the cutter chain 3 is operating, from the position shown in Fig. 10 to the position shown in Fig. 11, in such a manner as to make its withdrawal cut in which it cuts out the remainder of the vertical kerf. Obviously, if desired, however,
'instead of using the truck driving mechanism as. above described in order thus to propel the machine toward or from the face in making its starting or withdrawal cuts, the flexible connection 20 may be utilized, the samethen being connected in a well known manner, as shown in full lines in Fig. 12, toa point in advance of the machine and adjacent the face during the starting cut or, as shown in dotted lines in that figure, to a point in rear of the machine during the withdrawal cut.
During the use of my improved construe tion and while the cutter bar is cutting its vertical kerf in the face of the entry, cer tain impurities may be encountered, and I have accordingly provided improved means whereby an operator may cut around the same. These means preferably, as shown herein, include the turntable mounting 5 of the machine upon the truck, and preferably also comprise the guiding and supporting means 6 disposed beneath the front end of the machine in an are preferably struck from the same center as the machine pivot, and cooperating means of suitable form whereby the machine may be adjusted about its pivot during cut-ting. As illustrated, these cooperating means assume the form of a double acting jack having its elements 25 and 26 pivotally connected to themachine and truck, respectively, at 27 and 28, and 0p eratively connected by a reversely threaded turnbuckle 29. Thus, it will be observed that by adjusting the turnbuckle 29, the angle of the machine relative to the truck and the lateral position of the bar during its out,
may be regulated as desired. For example, referring to Fig. 4, it will be noted that the llli my improved mechanism, the operator may also remove impurities by utilization of these means or the meansfor angling the bar relative to the machine, or by the use of either of these means in'conjunction with the means for propelling the truck back and forth. For example, should an impurity be encountered during the starting out, the same may readily be removed by withdrawing the bar and inserting the same directly into the coal while in its transport position illustrated in full lines in Fig. 1, thereby weakening the coal beneath the impurity in such a manner as to enable the bar when again inserted above the same to more read ily tear out the obstruction. Conversely, the same method of procedure may be followed when an impurity is encountered when making the withdrawal cut, or, if desired, when making that cut the: bar may be returned to transport position and withdrawn and insertedwhen disposed at an angle, as during the starting cut, in such a manner as to tear away the coal on the opposite side of the obstruction and thus permit the same to be more readily removed. If desired, the bar may also be inserted atother angles by providing any desired number of perforations 18 adapted to receive the pin it); In the use of my improvement, it will also be evident that through the provision of the turntable 5 the machine may swing into ava-riety of different angular positlons to enable it to make swinging cuts at different angles, and
readily be locked in its different positions, by
simply providing a series of perforations 31 in said turntable and a pin'32 adapted to be received in any one of the same and a suitable corresponding perforation, or perforations, in the truck frame -7.
In' Fig. 6 I have illustrated a modified form of the construction shown in the remaining figures of the drawing.- In this construction, it will be noted thatthe mining 'machine 1 is of the so-called room and pillar type and has its cutter bar Zrigidly' connected thereto as distinguished from pivotally connected thereto, as in a machine of pivot 33 disposed at a point adjacent the center of gravityv of the'machine and supported on suitable spaced upstanding oppositely located supports 34 carried on thetruck 7, and preferablyswiveled thereon on a suitable swivel connection 35. In this construction, it will be observed that in addition to the feed sprocket 13 and the idlers 22, other cooperating idler sprockets 36, 37, and 38are provided which are adapted to receive the flexible feeding element 20 in different angularpositions'of the machine determined by the location of one or more pins 39 in suitable registering apertures L0 in the supports 34 and the machine frame.
In this construction, as in the preceding construction, the machine may be transported from place toplace when its bar is in a horizontal transport position:corresponding to that shown in Fig. 1. However, in "this construction, when it is desired to adjust the bar from this position into its various operative positions, it will be observed that this is accomplished by threading the flexible feeding element. 20 in different relations and attaching the end of the same to a suitable supporter hook 41 disposable at diflerent points in thefaeeor longitudinally of the entry. For instance, in first swinging the bar up to the position shown inFig. 6, the chain is preferablyextended aroundunder the sprocket. 13 and over the upper idler 22 and then downward over the idler v38 to the member 41, which is then disposed adjacent the bottom and in 'rear of the 1 machine. During the starting cut, the entire mechanism may obviously be propelled longitudinally toward the face by arranging the parts as shown. To swing the bar downward in making its swinging out, the chain may, obviously, also be. passed over the lower idler 22 and the idler 37 to-the member 41 which is then disposed at a point substantially on the level ofthe bottom and in ad vance of the machine. Finally, in making the withdrawal cut,- the chain may be passed around the lower idler 22 and the front idler 37 to the member' ll which is-then disposed substantially on the level of thebottoin but in rear of the machine. In this construction, however, it will be observed that itis necessary to drill the bottom or face to receive the member 41, or to attach the'same or the chain to a jack, and for this reason theself -contained form of the invention first described is preferred. Obviously, in this modifiedconstruction, however, any suitable truck driving mechanism of the type hereinabove described may, if desired, be utilized to propel the truck about, the mine or to propelthe same during the reciprocating movements 'in' its cutting. operation and thus avoid the necessity for-drilling the face or thebottoni to receive the member 41 before making these movements.
Asa result of my improvement, and particularly of-the preferred form of'the same, it will be observed that. it is possible to advancethe-entry ver-yirapidly, the machine being adapted to rapid transport from place to place, and during the cutting operation anism, in the preferred form of my invention, being self-contained and requiring only relatively simple adjustments. It will also be observed that during the actual operation of cutting a' kerf the area of the kerf in an entry of a given. size is materially reduced as compared with the area of the k'erf required to be cut by an undercutter or any machine in which the cutting element moves transversely of the entry. Attention is also directed to the fact that through the use of my improved construction it is possible to shoot the coal clear from the mine bottom so that the loader may work directly upon the mine bottom without the necessity for digging up any unshot coal therefrom in a separate operation as is required when the kerf is inserted transversely at a point above the mine bottom and the shots are placed in the coal above the kerf as ordinarily occurs with a transverse kerf cutter operating above the mine bottom. As a result of my improved construction it will also be observed that it is possible to utilize standard mining machines of either the'longwall or room and pillar type as shearing machines, without materially changing the-machine or in any way destroying itsetticiency in its original capacity, standard machines as a result of my improvement being readily adapted to use in this connection andto use thereafter as bottom cutters when desired. These and other advantages of'my improved construction will, however, be clearly apparent to.
those skilled in the'art.
While I have in this application specifically described two embodiments which my invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that these forms of the same are 7 with said bar for swinging the same about tively connectable with said-feeding mecha nism for moving sald truck in either d1recits pivot, and truck driving mechanism cooperating with sald truck wheels and operation.
2. In a mining mechanism, in combination, a machine having a cutter bar provided with elements moving in an orbit having major and minor axes and provided with means for driving saidcutting elements and for moving said machine over the mine bot- .tom during cutting operation, said machine being operative to slide on the bottom with the orbit of its cutting elements parallel to a horizontal plane, and a mounting for said machine comprising a portable member and means thereon for supporting said machine with the orbit of its cutting elements parallel to a vertical plane, said mechanism including means whereby said bar may be moved towards and from a working face while maintaining a uniform angle relative thereto or may be caused to move while said ma chine remains stationary-in such manner that its major axis may traverse an angle such thatin its extreme positions it will occupy positions respectively above and be low a horizontal line which is in the plane of the angle and passes through its vertex.

In a mining apparatus, supporting means movable on a traclrway, cutter mechanism thereon comprising a pivotally mounted cutter bar having a chain adapted to cut a vertical kerf for said bar in a face when said bar is presented edgewise thereto, and self-contained power operated means comprising but a single motor for moving said bar bodily rectilinearly of the trackway, about its pivot in the same plane, and re versely rectilinearly of the trackway to insert a parallel ribbed vertical kerf ina face in front of the end of the traclrway, said selfcontained power operated means comprising wheels engageable with said trackway and oppositely actuatable to effect such opposite bodily rectilinear movements of said bar.

In a mining apparatiis, a wheeled truck movable on a trackway, cutter mechanism thereon comprising a motor and a pivotally mounted cutter chain carrying cutter bar swingable in a vertical plane at the end of the truck, and self-contained power operated mechanism-supported solely by said truck for moving said bar angularly in its vertical plane, and for actuating said truck wheels to effect reverse longitudinal bodily movements of said bar relative to said trackway during cuttin 56'. In a mining apparatus, a. wheeled truck movable over a trackwa-y, a mining machine supported thereon in edgewise relation thereto, and comprising cutting mechanism including a normally forwardly extending cutter bar movable in a vertical plane about a transversely disposed pivot, said mining machine also comprising feeding mechanism, and means connectible to said feeding mechanism for selectively moving said bar during cutting about said pivot or bodily therewith relative to a face to in sert a kerf in a face extending transversely of the traclrway.

In a mining apparatus, a wheeled truck movable over a trackway, a. mining machine supported thereon in edgeWise relation thereto, and comprising cutting mechanism including a normally forwardly extending cutter bar movable in a vertical plane about a transversely disposed pivot, said mining machine also comprising feeding mechanism, and means connect-ible to said feeding mechanism for selectively moving said bar during cutting about said pivot or bodily therewith relative to a face to inserta kerf in a face extending transversely of the trackway, said last mentioned means including truck wheel driving mechanism.

In a mining apparatus, a wheeled truck movable over trackway, a mining machine supported thereon in edgewise relation thereto, and comprising cutting mechanism including a normally forwardly extending cutter bar movable in a vertical plane about a transversely disposed pivot, said mining machine also comprising feeding mechanism, and means connectibleto said feeding mechanism for selectively moving said bar during cutting about said pivot or bodily therewith relative to a face to insert a. kerf in a face extending transversely of the tra'ckway, said last mentioned means including truck wheel driving mechanism operatively connected mechanism.
59. In a mining machine, a wheeled sup port, a machine frame thereon including a motor, cutting mechanism at one end of said motor including a swingable cutter bar this posed in a. vertical plane, and means for operating said cutting mechanism and swinging said bar respectively connected to opposite ends of said motor.
60. In a mining machine, a wheeled support, a machine frame thereon including a motor, cutting and feeding mechanisms connected to opposite ends thereof, said cutting mechanism being adjustable and disposed in llll) with said feeding ill) - a vertical plane, and means for adjusting said cutting mechanism driven by said feeding mechanism.
61. In a mining machine, a wheeled sup port, a machine frame thereon including a motor, cutting and feeding mechanisms connected to opposite ends thereof, said cutting mechanism being ustable and disposed in a vertical plane, and means for adjusting said cutting mechanism connectible at will with said feeding mechanism.

In a mining machine, a. wheeled support, a machine frame thereon including a motor, cutting and feeding mechanisms at opposite ends thereof, cutter adjusting mech anism for adjusting said cutting mechanism in a vertical plane,and means for actuating one of said mechanisms from-the front end of the motor and the remainder from the rear end of the motor. In a mining machine, a wheeled support, a machine frame thereon movable rectilinearly during cutting and including a motor having an axis of rotation parallel to the direction of rectilinear movement and a driving gear element at each end thereof, cutting mechanism including a cutter bar adjustable. on an axis on the front end of said frame, means for driving said cutting mechanism from one end of said motor, and means for adjusting the bar about its axis driven from theopposite end of said motor.

In a mining machine, a wheeled support, a. machine frame thereon including a motor, cutting mechanism including a cutter bar adjustable on a horizontal transverse axis on the front end of said frame, means for driving said cutting mechanism from one end of said motor, and means for adjusting the bar about its axis driven from the opposite end of said motor.

In a mining machine, a machine frame including a. motorhaving a driving gear element at each end thereof, cutting mechanism including a cutter bar adjustable on an axis on the front end of said frame, means for driving said cutting mechanism from one end of said motor, means for adjusting the bar about its axis driven from the opposite end of said motor, and feeding mechanism for said frame operative to feed the same rectilinearly in opposite directions towards and from a face during cutting and driven motor and driven from said adjustii'ig means. In a mining machine, a wheeledsupport, a machine frame thereon including motor, cutting mechanism at one end of said 'motor including a swinging'cutter bar dis posed in a vertical plane, and means for operative connections between oneend of said motor and said cutting mechanism, operative connections between the other end of said motor and said cutter adjusting mechanism, said cutting mechanism'being adjustable and disposed in a verticalplane, and means for feeding said cuttingmechanism driven from said operative connections between said cutter adjusting mechanism and said motor. 1

In a mining machine adapted to arcwall cutting, a wheeled truck, a shearing cutfor chain carrying cutter bar thereon, a cutter chain driving sprocket coaxial with the pivot of said bar, a bar swinging member movable about said bar pivot, a horizontal motor having its longitudinal axis extending longitudinally of the truck, and operative connections between one end of said motor and said sprocket and between the other end of said motor and said member.

In a mining machine, a wheeled truck, a machine frame thereon, a motor thereon having a power shaft extending longitudinally of said frame, a cutter chain-carrying cutter bar swingable about a horizontal transverse axis at oneend of saidnotor, motor operated cutter chain driving means, and means driven by the end of said power shaft remote from said cutter bar for adjusting the latter oppositely about its axis.

In a mining machine, a wheeled truck, a machine frame thereon including amotor having a driving gear element at each end thereof, cutting mechanism including a cut er bar carrying orbitally moving cutting elements and adjustable on an axis on the front end of said I12III1 3,I11G21DS for driving said cutting mechanism from one end of said motor, and means for adjusting said bar about its axis and effecting opposite rectilinear feeds thereof while said elements carrying orbitally moving cutting elements and adjustable on a transverse axis on the front end of said frame to make a shearing cut, means for drivlng sald cutting mechanism from one end of said motor, and means for adjusting said bar about its axis and effecting opposite rectilinear feeds thereof while said elements traverse at all times their orbits in the same direction, said last mentioned means driven from the opposite end of said motor.

In a mining machine, a wheeled truck, a machine frame thereon including a motor, cutting mechanism including a cutter bar carrying orbitally moving cutting elements and adjustable on an axis on the front end of said frame, means for driving said cutting mechanism from one end of said motor, and means for adjusting said bar about its axis and effecting opposite rectilinear feeds thereof while said elements traverse at all times their orbits in the same direction, said last mentioned means driven from the opposite end of. said motor and including a flexible element and rotatable means cooperating therewith.

In a mining machine, a wheeled track, a machine frame thereon including a motor, cutting mechanism including a cutter bar carrying orbitally moving cutting elements and adjustable on a transverse axis on the front end of said frame, means for driving said cutting mechanism from one end of said motor, and means for adjusting said bar about its axis and effecting opposite rectilinear feeds thereof while said elements traverse at all times their orbits in the same direction, said last mentioned means driven from the opposite end of said motor and including a flexible element and rotatable means cooperating therewith.

In a mining machine, a wheeled truck, a motor having a rotating shaft, a frame mounted on said truck and supporting said motor, a vertically swinging cutting mechanism at one end of and actuated by such end of said motor, and means for effecting opposite rectilinear bodily movements of said cutting mechanism and opposite swinging movements of said bar actuated by the opposite end of said motor and including a flexible chain member.
76. In a mining machine, a wheeled truck, a body thereon, a horizontal motor carried by said body and having its longitudinal axis extending lengthwise of said truck, cutting mechanism driven from the forward end of said motor including a cutter bar pivoted on a transverse axis at the front end of said body for vertical swinging movement, mechanism driven from the rear end of said motor for swinging said cutter bar about its pivot to effect a swinging cut, and mecha nism driven from the rear end of said motor for bodily feeding said machine in opposite directions for effecting sumping and withdrawal cuts.

In a mining machine, a wheeled truck, a body thereon, a horizontal motor carried by said body and having its longitudinal axis extending lengthwise of said truck, cutting mechanism driven from the forward. end of said motor including a cutter bar pivoted on a transverse axis at the front end of said body for vertical swinging movement, mechanism driven from the rear end of said motor for swinging said cutter bar about its pivot to efiect a swinging cut and mechanism driven from the rear of said motor and connected to the truck wheels for driving the latter for bodily feeding the machine in op posite directions to effect sumping and withdrawal cuts.

In a mining machine, a wheeled truck, a self propelled mining machine disposed edgewise thereon including a cutter bar pro vided with cutting elements circulating in a plane orbit pivoted on a horizontal pivot at the front end of said truck and including a motor, feeding mechanism driven from one end of said motor operatively connected with said bar for swinging the same about its pivot, truck driving mechanism driven from the same end of said motor operatively connected with. said feeding mechanism for feeding said truck in either direction to feed said bar into the work or to withdraw the same, and mechanism driven from the op posite end of .said motor for actuating said cutting elements.
79. In a mining machine, a. wheeled truck, cutting mechanism thereon including a cutter bar having cutting elements circulating in a vertical plane and pivoted directly on a horizontal pivot atthe front end of said truck and including a motor, feeding 1nechanism driven from the rear end of said motor operatively connected with said bar for swinging the same about its pivot, truck driving mechanism cooperating with said truck wheels and operatively oonnectible with said feeding mechanism' for moving said truck in either direction said truck driving mechanism being driven from the rear end of said motor and mechanism driven from the front end of said motor. for actuating said cutting elements.
