INVENTOR' KARL BUXBAUM" BY M M ATTORNEY Patented Mar. 5, 1929..
barren stats ears-a KARL BUXBAUM, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA:-
NEEDLE rnananiia Application filed February 14., 1928. SeriaI No. 254,239..
ator, thereby elimin'atino' the objections of the usual threading operation. v v
The invention contemplates certain features of construction, combinations and ar rangenients of elements novel to the needle threading art, whereby certain important and well defined advantages are obtained. One of said advantages is that my device can be used with both ordinary and sewing machine needles without any change in construction Another advantage is that my device can be mounted on a finger like a ring, leaving the hands free for the needle threading operation. Still another advantage is that my device can be'made from blanks which may be easily stamped from metal, celluloid or other suitable material. Yet another advantage is that the needle catcher or the threading element may be'replaced with another without changing'any other element of the device.
With these and other objects in view, im-
portant though not indispensible features of my invention relate to the provision of supporting means for the needle threader; a separable needle threading element, or needle catcher made from a metal stamping and a guide channel to hold the needle'in position for the needle threading operation.
I have illustrated the inventionin the accompanying drawing in which Figure l is a front elevation of one embodiment of my device showing the needle in, needle threading position.
Figure 2 is a. side elevation thereof.
Figure 3 shows the blanks for making said embodiment.
Figure 4 is aplan View of a modification and Figure 5 shows the blanks for making the modification. 1
To make the embodiment of my device shown in Figure 1, blank A is bent to form the two horizontally parallelarrns l and 2;
' the connecting curved portion3; the vertical portion 4 and the ring or annular shaped portion 5. In bending the blank, care should be taken that the apertures or slots 6 and 7 are in vertical alinement. Then the blank B is bent along the dotted lines to form the two vertically parallel portions l0 and l1 and thetwo horizontally parallel portions 7 S and 9 and slipped on the elements 1 and l as shown in Figure 2. The blank C isthen bent around the parallel ar-m2 to form a clamping element 12. Tocompletethe device, the blank D which is provided with a hook 13 is bent on the dotted line to; form a tab and inserted from below through the two alined slots (Sand 7. Then the clamping.
element 12 is shifted in position so. thatthe tab on the end of the catcher is clamped between the bottom thereof and the arm 2 As shown in Figure 2, the ends of the blank C are spaced. sufficiently apart. to allow the clampingelement to' be shifted into clamping position.
-- To use my device the needle to be threaded which is denoted by a is placed with its eye over the hook 13 of the needle catcher,
and with its shank in the guide'channel 14;
formed by the elements 4: and 8. YA thread is' looped and drawn taut throughthe hook 13.
Removing the needle from the device auto.-
matically threads the needle.
During the threading threader may be supported in any suitable operation thev way; It is here shown as being provided with I a ring shaped end 5 so that it may be slipped on a finger, but it may bemade with a clamp so that the device may be fastened or attached to a coat lapel or to a thimble To further simplify my device, I may make it from two blanks A andB as shown in Figure 5, the blank B serving the functions of blanks B and G and part of the blank A.
To assemble the device of this modification,
the blank B is bent upon the dotted lines a to form two vertically parallel arms 4 and 8 which form the guide channell i in the finished device. The intermediate portion of r the blank is bent to form two horizontally parallel arms 20 and 21, the latter arm, beingv shown in dottedlines in Figure 4. In this modification the blank A is provided with.
only one slot 6 as theother is notnecessary, The blank A is bent to form two parallel arms 1 and 2 and the ring 5 ina similar manner as in the first. embodiment. The bent blank B is then slipped onthe arm 1 from the left and shifted to the extreme right so that the slot 6 is entirely uncovered. The needle catcher D is then inserted in the slot from below and the bent. blank Bis shifted to the left to clamp the tab of thenee'dle reentrantor cutout portion 25to provide ample space for the needle catcher Both embodiments ofrny invention are 7 used in the same manner and both ma be used to thread sewing mach ne needles. In threadlng sevvlng machine needles the device is held vertically and the needle catcher of vice versa.
isinserted into the eye of the needle instead The thread is then looped and drawn taut around the catcher which is then removed from the eye of the needle thus threading the needle.
While in order to comply with the statutes,
the invention has been described in lai'iouae'e more or less specific as to certain structural features it is to be unders ood that the invention is not to be limited or restricted to any specific details, but that the means constructions herein described comprises but two modes of puttlng the inven tion lnto effect.
and the invention is therefore claimed broadlyin'any of its DOSSlblQ forms or modificationsvvithin the scope of the appended claims. '1. As an article ofmnnnfacture, a needle 'threader comprising a U shaped supportvided with spaced arms for holding the shank of a needle in threading position.
' 2. As an article of manufacture, a needle threader comprising a relatively narrow strip forming a support, said strip being provided with a slot, a separable threading element eiotendinnthrough said slot and. clamping means slidably mounted on said narrow strip to permit the insertion or removal'of the threading element from said slot.
3. A needle threader as defined-in claim 2, said device being provided With a guide chan- I nel for holding a needle'in threading position said clampingmeans and said guide channel being formed integrally W1th each other.
v KARL BUXB-AUM.
In testimony whereof I aff x my signature.
