Description
'UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NORMAN I. Benson NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN HATV\ENTILATORS.
Specification forming part ofA Letters Patent No. 170,450, dated November 30, 1875; application filed January 13, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NORMAN I. REEs, of New York city, in the State ot' New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements relating to Ventilated Hats, of which the following is a specitcation:
I have discovered and practically' applied a means of Ventilating a hat through the interstices in the band Without requiring any regulating means.
The accompanying drawing forms a part of this specification, and represents a hat partly in section. The band is represented as partially removed, to better show the holes in the body.
I take a hat, A, of any ordinary or suitable material, and punch or otherwise produce holes a. in that portion which is covered by the ordinary band. I cover this on the exterior by a hat-band, B, of otherwise ordinary appearance, which is made of as open texture as is practicable, to allow the ingress and egress of air through its meshes. On the interior of the hat, below the series of holes a, I introducea strip of cork or other flexible material, C, about as wide asthe band B, grooved perpendicularly on the outer face, as -shown by c. This strip C is attached to the hat by cementing, sewing, or other suitable means. To the inner t'aee of this strip C I attach the sweatleather D, so that there is a space provided between the sweat-leather D and the hatbody A, above the strip C, through which the air may move up and down.
The series of holes a and the strip C c may extend quite aroundthe hat, or may be introduced only at the sides or at thefront or rear, or both. The question along what parts it shall extend may, with a little taste and skill, be made to depend in part upon the shape of the Wearers head. It' the head is long and narrow, the ventilation may be entirely at the sides, so that the hat will approximate the ordinary appearance. The reverse arrangement should be employed in hats for heads which are too round.
My hat presents the ordinary appearance to the eye. A gentle current of air will be produced by the direct impinging against the band of the force of the wind, or bythe resistance of the air in the motion-caused by Walking; but the current, being moderated by the presence of the gauze band, and deflected upward by the grooved piece C and the imperforate sweat-leather, will not be disagreeable even in the strongest gaies. It requires no regulating.
I claim as my invention- The piece C, grooved on one side, in combination with the hat band B, perforated body A, and imperforate sweat-leather D, as and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 8th day of January, 1875, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
l NORMAN I. REES. Witnesses:
THoMAs D. SrETsoN, E. VOLKMANN.
