SPOOL 0F TAPE AND PROTECTOR THEREFOR.
Application filed August 22, 1927. Serial No. 214,690;
The invention relates generally to devices or spools for tape, ribbon and the like, and to their holding elements, and more particularly to spools of surgical adhesive tape or plaster.
Objects of the invention are to simplify and lessen the cost of production and to enhance the eiiiciency of such devices to the end that the assembly, the spool-and its complemental holder, will preserve the original aseptic condition of the tape, and so that the spool may be withdrawn and replaced with facility and dispatch without diminish-ing the protecting properties of the assembly.
The nature of the invention consists in the provision of a spool embodying an axial core or center and its complemental end flanges or heads whereof one is a simple disk and whereof the other is formed with an endwise directed flange or rim, and a slip on holder embodying a cylindrical shell or casing open at both ends and provided internally with an annular shoulder which constitutes a stop or abutment for the disk head of the spool and also cooperates with said head to exclude dust and other sources of contamination from the adhesive tape or other commodity wound u on the spool, the other head performing a 1i e function through the medium of a friction fit between its rim and the inner wall of the holder, it being understood that slight pressure of the thumb upon the disk head will be suii'- cientto overcome the friction grip and result in the ejection of the spool.
Referring to the drawing, 5 represents a` spool wound with surgical adhesive ta e 6, and 7 represents its complemental ho der. The spool embodies an axial core or center 8 formed o r provided at its ends with peripheral anges or heads 9 and 10, the latter having an endwise directed rim or collar 11.
The mating element or holder is a cylindrical shell whose inside diameter is such as to provide a snug or friction lit-with relation to the rim element 0f the spool. The shell is formed or provided with an annular shoulder or seat l2, which has a dual function, to wit: to constitute a stop or abutment for the proximate or disk head of the spool, and in conjunction with the same to seal that end of the spool, the other end being sealed by the friction fit of the rim or collar 11. In short, when the parts are assembled the adhesive tape or other commodity on the spool is completely sealed by the heads or end flanges acting iii concert with the cylindrical shell or casing.
Evidently slight pressure of the thumb against the disk head of the spool will overcome the friction fit of the rim element and permit the withdrawal of the spool.
Fig. 3 illustrates an added detail wherein the rim 0r collar element of the spool is notched and formed with a knife edge 13 to provide self-contained means for severing the tape. L
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new isl. A spool and protector assembly, comprising a s ool having fixed heads, and a tubular shel adapted for telesco ic and friction -it with relation to the hea s, and open at its ends to expose the spool to manual pressure to separate it from the shell.
'2. A spool having fixed heads, combined with a separable ring of length sufficient to overhang the heads, one end of the ring having a limiting stop or collar to arrest the passage of the spool, and one of the heads having a Hauge to take a binding fit on the inner wall of the ring` the spool being otherwise free and exposed to endwise pressure to separate it from the ring.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures.
ROBERT P. HAYDEN. FRANCIS N. MANLEY.
