[Also in Division D1] Wrapping 55 (Fig. 1) for a reel of wire 27 (see Division D1) is attached to annular side plates 41, 42 fixed on the core of the reel, while the plates are braced against axial displacement. In the form shown the wrapper 55 of fibreboard or sheet material is placed round the wound coil, spliced at 56 and its sides are secured to the outer edges of the plates 41, 42 by forming rollers 60, 61, the flanges 50 on the plates being bent back to grip the wrapper (Fig. 5, not shown). Alternatively the flanges of the plates may be U-shaped (Fig. 6, not shown) and a tie 67 applied to hold the wrapper in place. Circular rims on the plates house mandrels 48 (Fig. 2, not shown) on the drive discs 25 of the winding machine, the axles 24 of which are moved axially to hold the reel. The core may be cylindrical, or formed from two frustums of a cone 37, 38 (Fig. 7) which may be separated by engaging a tab 40 with a turning key to remove the section 37 and enable the reel to be unwound from the inside. The flanges of the core and plates may be joined as shown at 43 or 44. In alternative embodiments the spool 54 may be transferred to a separate machine to secure the wrapper 55. The spool may be lowered on to a wrapper carried on an endless conveyer and recompressed at the wrapping station. Alternatively it may be transported in a rigid support. The wrapper may be removed by a rotary cutter. To prevent corrosion, a valve may be provided so that the package may be charged with helium.
