Description

Patented Mer. 55,.
UNTED STA'ES PATENT oFFics.
' ANDREW J. CARMICHA-L AND ORESTE BALZANO, 0F NEW HAVEN, CONECTICUT, AS;`
SIGNOR/S TO THE G'RE' MANUFACTURING COMPANY,
NECTICUT.
A CORPORATON OF G01N"- SENNG-MACHINE ERESSER FQCT.
Application filed Februaiy 15, 1927. lSerial No. 165,419.
r1`his invention has'foi' its object to provide a sheet metil seeing; machine piessei iffoot which is n adjusting oi sel'leveling, in that it compia a shank litted for attach- 5 ment to a pie.,. dini and havingl a depending portion, a small bloei a'aclied to said shenli by a tiansvei'se pivot-pin, and a ey-'toot ittaehed to said block by a longitudinally disposed. piif'et--pin 'which is at a lo right angle to seid first-named pivot-pin.
These two oivet--iiins therefore provide what is pr: ally a universal joint enabling` the pife.sseii"oot to adjust itself in any direction accoiding` to the iequii'emens of the vaoil;
passing beneath it.
ln the accompanying` drawing Fi 1 is an enlaiged plan view oit the impioved pi'esserfoot. 2 and 3 are iront and side views,
respectively, of the saine; and Fig. l1 is a partiel section on line fle-4, Fig. 1.
Referring tothe drawing, 12 denotes a pi'essei'oot shank which is forked 'for attach ment to a sevv'ing machine pi'esser-bai, said shank having depending` portions or lugs 13.
25 Pivo-tally attached to the said depending poitions or lugs 13, by a ti'ansveise pivot-pin 111, is a sm all block 15 to which' the presser-foot 16 is pivotelly z ytaehed by a pin 1'4"' arranged at a right angle to the pivot-pin 141. The pivot. pins 14 and 1T aie in different horizontal planes, as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and el.
it will thus be seen that the tivo pivotepins referred to will enable the pi'essei'gtoot to tilt longitndinally and to rock laterally, so that it wi `l readily adjust itself? in any d. :my in condities of the work in Neath it.
The. depending' lugs 1S are provided with shoulders Lil and 13h ai'ianged to come in cfmiaet with the shoulders 16 on a raised pi'essei'-f )ot pari'. oi' surface 16", respectively, to limit the upwardly tilting' movements of the piesseitoot 16 which is loosely hung beneath said lugs 13, so as to have a limited tilting' movement longitudinally. The sdewise rocking movements of said presser-foot are limited by Contact of the shoulders 13b With the integral, forwardly-turned raised part 16" doubled onto the top of said presser-foot.
bloc
angles to each othei, alloid a imivei'sal joint connection between the shank 12 and they presser-foot 16, and the loosely hung connec`- tions iieteiied to will peiinit the piessei1- foot to adjust itself in any direct-ion to accommodate any inequalities in the Woii; passing beneath it, as Will be apparent.
- As the parte oi this device are mostly of sheet metal the improved presser-foot may be manufactured at little expense by stamping, as will be understood.
Having thus desci'ibed oui" invention.l we claim and desire toseoure by Letteis Patent:
The combination with a sewing machine piessei'd'oot shank constructed for attachment to a messer-bar and havingdepending lnpgs,o1p a block pivoted between said lugs by a transverse pivot-pin and having a transverse recess in its bottom, a presser-foot loosely hung beneath said block and having an integral, 'foi'vaidly turned raised part doubled onto the Ytop of said presser-foot, said raised pei-t havingA an upwardly projecting lug entei'ing seid recess, and a longitudinally arranged pivot pin passing;v thiough' said and upvai'dly projecting lug, said deliigis having shoulders to Contact with parte et said presses 'foot to limit its tilting and rocking movements, seni `pivotpins being in d' i r loi'izontal planes', and all el the parts of said device, excepting said block and pivot pins, being` of sheet metal, so that the said device may be mostly made by stamping', thus avoiding expense in making.
In testimony whereof we aliix oui signatures.
