SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 722,647, dated March 10, 1903. Application filed May 21, IQQO. Serial No. 17,460. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RUssEL G. WOODWARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waukegamin the county of Lake, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use: ful Improvements in Presser-Feet for Sewing- Machines, of which the following is a description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to an improvement in presser-feet for sewing-machines, and has been designedespecially for use on what is known as the Union Special Yoke Ruffling Sewing Machine, upon which I made application for Letters Patent of the United States on the 20th day of July, 1898, Serial No. 686,444.
It is the object ofthe present invention to provide a presser-foot having a part which partakes not only ofa tilting movement, but which when a seam is passing under it will rise bodily to allow it to pass under. This is especially useful in a machine of the character described, where the presser-foot is made in two parts, one part bearing on that portion of the fabric to be ruffled, while the other bears on the thicknesses of goods not ruffled, for if the presser-foot has onlya tilting motion on its pivot when a heavy seam or high ridge of cloth is reached the foot will tilt when the projection strikes the toe of the foot, but will bind beneath the body of the foot. So, also, if the'foot has only a vertical bodily sliding movement when the" projection strikes the too there will be a bind, which will last until such time as the ridge of the goods reaches the central point of the foot. By providing, however, an arrangement of foot in which the part bearing on the ridge or seam both tilts and lifts bodily the foot will first tilt as the ridge or seam strikes and will then gradually rise bodily as the ridge or seam passes under it.
The invention therefore consists of a presserfoot constructed as hereinafterdescribed, and referred toin the appended claims.
The invention'is' illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved presser-foot. Fig. 2 is a vertical crossse'ction; Fig. 3, a sectional, side elevation of thesa'rne. Fig. 4 is a detail View of the upright vertical pin, and Fig. 5 is a detail view of the movable part of the presser-foot.
In the drawings the presser-foot is shown as provided with a shank 1, adapted to be clamped around the lower end of the presserbarA. It has the integral rigid part 2, adapted to bear on a portion of the fabric. 7 The other portion 3 -of the presser-foot has the upwardly-extending lugs 4 4, embracing the part 5, which is formed with the shank of the presser-foot.
Passing through an opening 6 in the part 5 of the presser-foot is an upright pin 7, headed on its lower end and squared off on two sides, resting within the groove 8 in the part 3 of the foot;
Passing through the sides 4 4 and the lugs 9, adjacent thereto, is the horizontal pin 10, which also passes through the opening 11 in the lower end of the upright pin 7 and pivots therein, so that the part 3 has a tilting movement. The upper part of the upright pin 7 is threaded, and a small nut 12 is screwed thereon, this nut being used to adjust the presser-foot to bring the bottoms of the parts 2 and 3 in the same plane. When the proper adjustment is had, thetop of the pin and nut is slotted slightly to receive the spring 13, which keeps the part 3 normally pressed down. Under the action of a ridge or seam or increased thickness of goods the part 3 may rise bodily vertically, the upright pin 7 sliding up through the opening 6 until its head prevents further movement.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A sewing-machine presser-foot, comprising a main portion adapted to bear upon the goods and having a transverse projecting part, a vertical pin passing loosely through said projecting part and a foot portion adapted to bear on the goods and pivoted to said vertical pin, whereby a tilting movement and also bodily vertical movement is permitted,
with means for keeping said foot portion normally depressed.
2. A sewing-machine presser-foot, comprising a rigid portion adapted to bear on the goods and including a part as 5, a vertical pin passing loosely through the part 5, a foot portion adapted to bear on the goods embracing said part 5, and pivoted to said vertical pin, whereby a tilting movement and also bodily vertical movement is permitted the said foot portion; means for keeping the foot portion normally depressed; substantially as described.
3. Asewing-machine presser-foot, comprising a main portion having a transverse projecting part, a vertical opening therethrough, a pin sliding therein, having a transverse opening in its lower end, and a foot portion upon which the. lower end of said pin rests pivoted to said pin; means for keeping the foot portion normally depressed; substantially as described.
4. Asewing-machine presser-foot, comprising a main portion having a transverse projecting part, a vertical opening therethrough, a pin sliding therein, having a transverse opening in its lower end, and a foot portion pivoted to said pin above the lower end of said pin, said pin being provided with a head on its lower end, resting in a groove in the foot portion; means for keeping the foot portion normally depressed; substantially as described.
5. Asewing-machine presser-foot, comprising a main portion having a transverse projecting part having a vertical opening therethrough, a pin sliding in said vertical opening having a transverse opening in its lower end, and a foot portion pivoted to said pin above the lower end thereof, said pin being provided with a head on its lower end squared on two sides and resting in a groove in the foot portion; means for keeping the foot portion normally depressed; substantially as described.
6. Asewing-machine presser-foot,comprising a rigid portion, a vertical opening therethrough, a pin sliding therein, having a transverse opening in its lower end, and a foot portion pivoted to said pin, and means for keeping said foot portion normally depressed, said pin having on its upper end above the rigid portion of the foot, an adjustable nut; substantially as described.
