i'l his inv ts i 1 {lorries and other hand boats, canoe I "l aims to provide an oar propel led ho ins: device w n the rearward movement 's; occasioned by the rear-- \vi inoveinein, of winpleinental handles so that the boat be properly propelled in the direction the oarsinan with the ob vious result of enabling the oarsinan to row a in can out the invention there pro-- vided a pa c at similarlyconstructed units each of which incliiides generally a plate pivoted to the gunwaie o which ismounted a pair othandle members the gears of predetermined ratio. r i i The plate is reversible so that either oi the handle members may detachahly receive the oar blades so that the heat can be propelled at high speed necessitating greater effort on the part of the oarsinan, or at low speed requiring less effort on the part of the oarsman An'important object of this invention resides in the provision of an caring device that oi? simple construction and that may be attached to the gunvvale ot' a boat without in any Way Whatever altering the construction of the boat.
With the'foregoing and other objects in view as the nature ot the invention \vill'be better understood, the same comprises the novel term, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully shown in the accompanying drawings and claimed. i
In the accompanying drawings wherein like reterence characters indicate correspondin o: parts throughout the several views:
Figure l is a fragmentary plan VIEW otthe rear end of a ron boat or the like equipped with pair of the caring devices construhted f in accordance with the invention.
Figure :2 is a fragmentary transverse section through the top board of one of the boat gunwales disclosing the caring device in side clevation.- I V p a v Figure 3 is a bottom plan view otthc device per se, the oar blade being removed. 1
Figure 4 is a fragmentary section through ition relates to new and useful caring devices 'lfor row the boat and upon ier ends thereof havinginteri'neshing described,
member and the oar blade disclosing more clearly the manner ofdetachable connection 8 between the member and said oar blades, and Figure 6 is a tragmen'tary'plan view of one of the boat gunwales and one of the oaring devices in this instance the device being re versed from the position asdisclosed in Figure 1.
Now having particular reference to. the
drawings, A designates a row boator similar hand propelled crafts, While B-B designate generally a pair me oaring devices constructed in accordancewith the present invention as associated with the gunivales of the 7 boat directly 5 Etront ot the oarsmans seat The wing device consists of a pair of spaced parallel attaching straps 5- -5 having openings therein to permitof their attachment oi the gunivalo of the boat transverselythereof through themedium 0t screws or other similar fasteners. The inner ends of these straps 5-5 are interconnectedby an arcuate bridge piece 7 that extends considerably above the straps '55 to serve as aresting block as will be presently brought out.
The forward ends of these straps 5 -5 are provided with upstanding ears 8-8 that are formed with alined openings to provide bearings for the pintle ends 99.ot a rock shaft 10. Thisrock shaft 10 istormed or associated otherwise Withthe bottom surface and substantially intermediate the ends of aright angularlyextending plate 11. P-ivoted upon the top side of this plate 11 at opposite sides of the center thereof isa pair of intern'leshing gears 12-12, the ratio of which with respect to each other is preferably two to one. i
Theperiphery of each of these gears is formed or constructed with a radial tubular member 18 to provide an actuating handle or I a holder tor an ear blade 14, the inner end of which is preferably of reduced diameter and "of a size to prov de a tight ht Within either tubular member.
Each tubular member is providedat its outer end with a flange and With opposed openings lose that the said blade id may be secured Within either tubular member through the medium of a locking pin 1'5, preferably of the readily removable type disclosec in Figure 5. 1 p ()bviously the plate i 11 may be pivotally arranged between the supporting straps 5-5 so that either one of the tubular members 13 may beemployed astheactuating handle 1 so that when in the position as illustrated in Figured the reverse motions of the innermost tubular members will result in the rapid movement of the oar blades, Whereas When the devices are reversed as disclosed in Figure 6 a slower motion of the blades Will be had. Obviously, by reason of the pivotal attachment of the plate 11, the oar blades may be readily raised from or lowered into the Water, While when raised the plate may be supported upon the bridge pieces 7.
In View of the foregoing description when considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawings itWill be apparent that I have provided highly novel, simple and e1-1- tieniely useful oa'ring device that is to be used on all hand propelled boats, and even though I have herein shown and described the invention as consisting of certain detail structural element-s5 it is nevertheless to be understo'odtiat some changes may be made therein Without affecting the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, What I claim is:
In an caring device of the character described a base member adapted for lon itudinal arrangement upon the gunwale of a boat, a transversely extending plate pivoted to said base member so that the same may rock laterally thereon, a pair of intermeshing gears mounted for rotation upon the surface of the plate construction extending radially from each gear to provide hand and oar receiving sockets, said gears being of different sizes sons to regulate the sweep of the oar blades, and an arcuate shaped member supported below the inner end of the plate and upon which the plate may ride.
In testimony whereof I aifiX my signature.
CHARLES ARTHUR BILESTINE.
