Description
J. SCHOEN.
SOFA-BE'DSTEAD.
NO-170,403. Patented Nov. 23, 1875 MPETERS. PHQTOJJTHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D C,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN SOHOEN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SOFA-BEDSTEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,403, dated November 23, 1875; application filed October 8, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN SGHoEN, of Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented an Improved Bed-Lounge, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to an improvement in folding or bed lounges, and has for its object to provide a simple means for securing the head-rest in position when the lounge is arranged as a bed.
The invention consists in the construction of and the manner of securing the head-rest frame to a slotted plate at each side of the bed when extended.
Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the lounge opened out to form a bed, with the head-rest in position. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the head-rest, showing the manner of its attachment to the bed. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the same.
In the drawing, A represents a loungebed opened out to form a bed, at the foot of which, at each side thereof, there is secured a metal plate, B, having a slot, at, and, nearer the foot, a rib, b. O is an iron frame, bent to a U shape and upholstered, except at the extremities, to form a head-rest, which is secured in position by inserting the ends in the slots (1,
the ends being scar-fed to hook under the ends of the slots. A notch, c, is cut in the under edge of the frame, at each side, to drop over the rib b and lock the head-rest firmly in position.
The principal advantages of my device are its simplicity of construction and the firmness with which the head-rest frame is held in position.
I am aware of Patent No. 156,131, granted to H. S. Garter, October 20, 1874:, and hereby disclaim the same as making any part of my invention. I am also aware that devices of the same general character as those described above have been used, and I do not, therefore,
claim any of them, broadly; but
What I claim as my invention isv The notched rest-frame 0, provided with notch 0 upon the under side, in combination with the plates B, provided with slots at, to engage with the scarfed ends of the frame, and the upwardly-projecting ribs b, to engage with the notches c, for the purpose specified.
JOHN SOHOEN. Witnesses:
