UNITED STATES CHESTER A. ANDERSON, OF WESTIBROOK, TEXAS.
' GAUGE-LINE CLEANER.
Application filed February 16, 1928. Serial No. 254,794.
This invention relates to improvements .in oil gauge lines and more particularly to a device for cleansing lines employed in gauging the depth of liquids, such as oil in tanks.
An important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily applied to the steel tape lines ordinarily employed in this ca acity.
A still further object of the invention is to produce a device of this character which may be employed as a brake the, movement of the tape as ered into the tank.
These and other objects I attain by the construction shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention and wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gauge line embodying a wiper constructed in accordance with my invention;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view through the wiper;
Figure 3 is a plan view of the wiper support;
Figure 4 is a section Figure 2.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 10 enerally designates a tape frameainclu ing a pair of spaced arms 11 joined at their opposite ends and mounting centrally a disk 12, which is provided with a handle 13, by means of which it may be rotated. Upon the periphery of this disk between the arms is wound a steel tape 14 which, when used 1n gauging tanks, has secured to its outer end a sinker 15 in the form of a weight secured by a cotter pin. This frame has a handle 16 which is threaded into the connection 17 between the inner ends of the arms.
accordance wih my invention,
vide a channel member 18, the arms which are spaced apart the same distance as the distance between the outer faces of the arms 11 of the frame. 7 The handle 16 is removed and the screw 20 thereof replaced in the frame through an opening 21 formed in the web 22 of the channel member. At its member is provided with a socket 23 formed by connecting the flanges 19 by transverse partition elements 24 I pro-- Iivoted to the channel member by a pivot 25 extendlng through the flanges 19 just inwardly of the innermost partition 24 is a bell for controlling t it is being low- I on the line 44 of l 19 of th crank lever 26 comprising spaced arms 27 which, above the channel member, are connected to produce a downwardly facing pocket 28. The lower ends of these arms are connected to one another and to a finger loop 29, as indicated at 30. In the pockets pads 31,
' which increase 1n thickness toward their moved and the tape passed between these pads after which the sinker is again secured in position.
It will be obvious that the hand of the operator engaged with the handle 16 may have a finger thereof passed through the finger loop 29 and so a single hand will serve to control both the handling of the line and the pressure with which the p 31 are urged toward one another and the hand may be used to operate the handle 13 to cause the tape to be drawn between the pads. It will also be obvious that in owering the tape into the tank, the movement thereof may be checked at any time by applylng the pressure of the finger to the ever 26.
The device may be very readily and cheaply constructed and is readily attached to the tape frame without in any manner interfering with the operation of the tape. Since the construction hereinbefore set forth a certain range of change and from the spirit of the invention, limit mysel to such specific structure except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim 1. In combination with a tank gauging line comprising a frame having a reel upon which e tape is wound and an operating handle for the reel, the frame further having a handle, a support extendin outwardly from the frame in the general p ane of the reel, a lever pivoted thereto and engageable'by the finger of a hand engaging the handle of the frame and pads carried by the support and lever between which the tape may be passed.
2. In combination with a tank gauging line comprising a frame having a reel upon which the tape is wound and an operating handle for the reel, the frame further having a handle, a support extending outwardly from the frame in the general plane of the 3. In combination with a tank gauging.
line comprising a frame having a reel upon which the tape 1s Wound and an operating handle for the reel, the frame further hav ing a handle, said handle having threaded engagement with the frame, a support having one end constructed to fit the frame at the handle engaging end thereof and having an opening through which the threaded portion of the handle may be extended, said support extending outwardly from the frame in the general plane of the reel, a lever pivoted thereto and coacting pads carried by the support and lever between which the tape may be passed.
ing a handle, said handle having threaded engagement with the frame, a support having one end constructed to fit the frame at the handle engaging end thereof and having an opening through which the threaded portion of the handle may be extended, said support extending outwardly from the frame in the general plane of the reel, a lever pivoted thereto and coacting pads carried by the support and lever between which the tape may be passed, the adjacent faces of the lever and support having sockets for the reception of said pads.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
CHESTER A. ANDERSQN.
