UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FLORANOE GITTEBE, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
' IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,362, dated November 23, 1875; application filed March 11, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FLORANGE GITTERE,
of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have in vented a Washing-Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, having reference to the accompanying sheet of drawings, which makes a part of this specification, and illustrates my invention more fully.
This invention relates to improvements in washing-machines and it consists in the de-.
tails of construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a washing-machine provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a plan, and Fig. 3 a side elevation, of the same.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in the various figures.
A is the tub of a washing-machine. It is a rectangular receptacle, having a double inclined bottom, and closed by the covers B B. G is a series of rollers, constituting the abrading-surt'ace in conjunction with dasher D. The rollers are pivoted within side pieces 0, wherein they freely revolve. The dasher D is pivoted within the sides of the tub A at D, and it is actuated by a hand-lever, E, movably attached to two uprights, A, through the medium of a connecting-rod, F, which rod passes through a slot-hole in the covers B B. One of the covers, B, is movably attached by hinges to a stationary transverse piece, B, upon the top and on the rear of the tub A, and the other, B, in a like manner to a movable transverse piece sliding between guides B, fastened upon the top of the said tub, in the front thereof. The transverse piece of the cover B is sufficiently shorter than the cover B to fit the guides B, and both its ends are tapered or beveled. to fit the corresponding bevel of the said guides B. Each of the covers is provided with an indent in its adjacent edge, which forms a slot-hole for the passage of the connecting-rod E, and the'operation of the cover B is such that when it is closed it will lock itself behind the guides B, and is thus prevented from sliding out, while, when the said cover is turned up, it will clear the said guides and can easily be removed.
Having thus. fully described my invention, in order to enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains, or with which itis most nearly connected, to make and use the same, I desire to secure to me by Letters Patent of the United States the following:
The combination, with the tub A, of the hinged cover B, attached to transverse pieces B, constructed to slide in guides B to render the cover removable, substantially in the manner set forth and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
FLOBANGE GITTERE.
