IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-LIGHTERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,356, dated November 23, 1875; application filed May 19, 1875. r

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE ELBREG, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, State of Ohio, have invented an Improvement in Fire-Lighters, of which the following is a specification:

My invention relates to the class of firelighters which are constructed with a looselyjointed metallic casing adapted to hold an absorbing substance to be saturated with coaloil or gasoline; and my invention consists, in the first part, in a peculiar construction of the, parts composing the cylinder or casing, and means of securing the parts together. My invention consists, in the second part, in combination with the handle, of a sliding cork or plug, which, when near the casing, serves as a cork or stopper for the coal-oi1 can, and when near the extremity of the handle gives freedom for the insertion of the-lighter into the coals of the fire to be lighted.

Figure l is a perspective view of my firelighter with one of the parts of the casing-removed. Fig. 2 is a crosssection of the easing. Fig. 3 illustrates a, modification in the construction of the casing.

The casing is composed of three parts, a b 0, having perforated lugs d lapping past each 7 The casin g being composed of three parts, it possesses more burning-surface, and the burning-jets from the joints are morefavorably disposed, than when made of a less or greater number of parts. The handle A is a piece of stiff wire bent, as shown at X, to form a shoulder, and

extending entirely throughthe casing and secured by a nut, or the riveting of the end of the wire over the shoulder X, serving as a stop to support the action of screwing on the nut or riveting the end. I prefer that the ends of the casing shall be notched across at Y, to receive the bent-wire shoulder X, to prevent the rotation of the wire in the casing while being secured, or while in use. 0 is a cork or plug perforated centrally, so as to fit the wire snugly., It is adapted to slide on the wire, so that when the lighter is put into the coal-oil can to be used for this lighter, the cork or plug will slide down and fit into the neck of the can, and when the lighter is to be used the cork is slid back to a point near the end of the handle to permit the lighter to be inserted freely into the coals in the fire-place.

I claim- 1. The combination of three part casing 00 b a, handle A with shoulder X,-and extending through the casing to form a rivet or receive a nut, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. In combination with the handle A and casing to b c, the sliding plug 0, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
